fishing reports

I just walked out to the pond and fished for maybe 25 minutes, middle of the day bright sun and stiff breeze.
WOW!!!!
Smallie Palooza…caught at least thirty from 4” to 13” all on Mepps gold spinner #2. Had some misses and some follows…I ripped the lure pretty fast. Only caught smallmouth.
This is exactly what I dreamed of when we put the pond in four years ago. I have no doubt whatsoever that they have spawned the last two years.

Nice non stop action, and everyone was returned to the pond safely.

Congrats!!!

Bill what is a 30 wide?

Ha my bad. Not everyone would know that.

Conventional reels come in various class sizes, the number correlates to how much line of a certain size they hold, how wide the spool is and max drag. Generally 16, 20, 30, 50, 80 and 130.

30 and under are small, 50 is mid size. The 80 and 130’s generally need to be fought from a chair or harness, to big to hold for most people.

I switched most of my 30’s out for 50’s last winter. 30’s are nice to fight a fish with until they get to be big fish.

For reference in the movie Jaws, Quinn was using a 130 class reel :)

MY kingfish reel is a torium 30 high speed. I have a 1/4lb spool of 30 mono on it Might stuff it with 40 or 50lb braid with a 100 yard topshot of 40 or 50. Something a bit tougher fighting them around pilings.

Boat fishing for me is limited to party boats. Even when I had a boat of my own, I'd still hit them up. I use penn spinfishers. 6500 with 30 mono, or a 4500 with 40lb braid. Tog, blues, porgy, seabass, or cassional striper.

You out deep to fish bill, or stay nearshore / cape may shoals. Need to hit up another black drum spawn trip. That should be on every fishermans bucket list.

Boat fare ok bill? You got tie breaker for your engine / cabin batteries? Any genset in that boat? 2 screws? Always had 2 modes of propulsion. Even if it was just a kicker. Even in my sailboat days had an entire spare outboard tucked below.

Grand hotel is the one. Getting a little beat up over the year I have been going there. Wife spent a few summers with her cousin's family in cape may. Uncle was a helicopter mechanic / flight engineer at the base.

Bill I use a Shimano tekota 800 to hold 400 feet of 45 pound Cooper. Not sure how that stacks to a 30 wide?

Ok fished an inland lake planted with walleye. The lake maybe going through turn over. We used the trolling motor and shined in water up to 7 feet. There were hundreds of walleyes just laying on the bottom completely docile not moving in water as shallow as 6 inches. Any idea why the maybe?

Just saw this. That's in the area of a 20 wide. I picked up a couple Shimano speedmaster 20's this Year for white marlin pitch baits. They only made 2 boat rides. Boat issues this summer......

Set my thermal hub house up for my nephew on Friday night on one of the southern MN toilets. He spent the night out there. Zero walleyes caught. I despise fishing in the southern half of MN. Its damn near worthless. 4" of good clear ice.

Explain why that is? I don’t know enough about the fishing there to know

The lakes in the southern half of the state are crowded, polluted, overfished, full of invasive species, dirty, gross, overdeveloped, noisy, etc.... The lake I tried is 350 acres and shaped like a frying pan. Highly prone to overfishing. Most of the lakes down south are boom and then bust. If you get a hot lake you can go from a couple people fishing to 100s of people fishing in a couple days. The lake gets raped and then its all over for 10 years while it tries to rebound.

I like to fish remote lakes up north that are lightly developed or not developed at all. I enjoy peace and quiet more than most. Don't want my fish swimming around in toilet water or 1,000 acres of ag run off.

Minnesota is really missing the boat ! Why don’t we cut back on the limits on some of these smaller overfished lakes ?

Honestly 3 walleye per day per person should be plenty… with six in possession. Four per day might be more acceptable?

Some of these small lakes should be (1)?

There are lakes in MN where you can catch 6 walleyes but only 5 sunfish ?

The head of the DNR fisheries is from my hometown and I know him. We’ve talked about it, I know they are trying to cut back on the walleye limit… but it’s a slow process . It would be nice to see lower limits so these lakes do not get fished out !

Unfortunately side imaging and forward facing sonar are ruining your fishing and the decline is only getting worse. Bwoods ask your dnr chief why he lacks the balls to stop it? Or is the money received from Pittman Robinson taxes more important? Put him on the spot I want to hear if he has the balls to respond??

The last time I spoke with him he was focused on lowering the walleye limit ? I doubt they will ban side imaging… but it can’t help these lakes !

Bwoods ask him my questions please. The idea to lower harvests is correct but it's not the reason. Make him man up the fisherman of Minnesota deserve better

The last awesome place left to fish in MN is the Boundary Waters. There are some places that are ok, but most of the lakes get prostituted to death. Its disgusting. Right now Red lake is getting pounded to death. Winni, Mille Lacs, Leech and LOW wont be far behind. I am old enough to remember the 100 perch limit on Winni and guys leaving with PAILS of fish. The worthless DNR didn't take any action until it was too late. Now you have to sort through 100 dinks to get a couple decent fish.

At least in the BWCA you can still have an awesome remote experience and release 98% of what you catch and still have plenty of fish for a couple of meals. I'm glad most people cant drag the forward facing sonar and all the other bullshit in there to rape those lakes. My local lakes are so damn bad that I don't even like to waste my time. I agree the rules need to change to actually protect fish populations.
