First Dove Hunt

I enjoyed my first dove hunt using a nice O/U my wife bought for me a couple of years ago. My friend, who is the landowner, said the action was slow, but the shotgun felt good and brought down 6 birds, which will be dinner tomorrow night.

Can’t hunt doves in NJ because they are song birds. But as kids we didn’t care. That’s some good eating. And we have doves….

Congrats! Are you addicted now?

Don't overcook them. Leave them more rare than you think you should. There's a very fine line between raw... and way over cooked.

^this man speaky the truth^
like deer, pretty expensive meat when you factor in cost to how much you get in return. bacon grease from wrapping them in bacon helps quite abit, but kinda tough to grille and get the bacon done but the meat not overcooked. Its kinda like grilling duck meat, and I've ruined a few for sure.

I ended up vacuumed packing the breast. The landowner brought me 4 more this morning, so I’ll have a great meal. I am going to use the traditional “bacon wrapped cream cheese jalapeño poppers” recipe using our garden jalapeños. I plan on soaking the breasts in buttermilk overnight. I’ve helped eat this recipe before, and it is amazing (and will not be overcooked, as noted above).

I did enjoy the hunt, and may plant some sunflowers on our place next year.
