First catkins!

nateb440

5 year old buck +
Made it to the farm today and was pleasantly surprised to find many of my Chinese chestnuts had catkins! Might get a few chestnuts this year. Apples and pears are loaded. My carmine jewel cherries have already been stripped by the birds. After staring at little growth for a few years, I love watching the progress on the trees this year. Pictured also, Illinois everbearing mulberry, newly planted elderberry with some raspberries. pawpaw. 47268394-6131-4FE1-B9D8-2BCBDAB4C83C.jpegFC6131F8-32AF-4F67-B39B-B7092D0166DE.jpeg1E04B083-151B-4874-BB54-91AE8CB5011A.jpegA988798C-F368-4172-9A4A-241598361673.jpeg729AFB7A-35CF-415D-A376-C186999574A9.jpeg

Looking good!
Very exciting to see fruit on trees, especially when it’s a first fruit.

Curious, how old are your chestnut trees?

The one pictured was a potted plant I got on clearance at southern states 4 years ago. It’s probably 6 or 7 years old. I have a number of seedlings I started about the same time and some are taller and fuller than the potted plant.

It is a beautiful sight when you first see catkins form. Same thing when you get the first few nuts!
