Firebreaks

I recently sent an email in to Drs. Lashley and Gulsby about firebreaks and different types and uses. They discuss my emailed question in this video/podcast:

It wasn't exactly my question, but it was helpful. I really like the idea of permanent, green firebreaks. I had asked what they thought about making the firebreaks inside the woods rather than on the edges if you were burning an old field. It would seem to me, that the burning in the fields has a lot of fuel, but once it hits the woods, it's less. If you blow out a firebreak in the woods with a leaf blower, you could burn the field, but by the time the fire got into the woods, the intensity would be a lot less.

In the West we use forage kochia and crested wheat for green strips mostly. I watched the largest fire in Utah's history burn into a 20 year old seeding and die. It's been a fight with the delusional purists to get green strips established in strategic locations.
