Fast growing screen by black walnuts?

Spruce85

A good 3 year old buck
I’m in the process of converting 20 acres of farmland into great deer habitat. I screened 3 sides with Norway spruce but the neighbor and I have black walnuts on the north side of property. What fast growing shrub will work for screening close to black walnuts? Do Speckled Alder provide much screening?

Walnut roots produce a toxin to reduce competition that affects the growth of some plants.....you may need to look into that further. How tall of a screen do you need?

I found out the hard way as they killed off a few of my spruces. I have since planted a few hemlocks as they are supposed to do good around black walnut. I’m looking into planting more of a shrub strip that provides some screening. Wouldn’t need to be higher than 8’-10’ to block view from neighbors.

I do have new apple trees in the area so I’d like to stay away from cedars. I have some arrowwood viburnum ordered for spring and see its tolerant of juglone. Do these viburnum have any value for a screen?

There are some good threads on the forum that cover the topic of screens

Egyptian wheat or sorghum x sudan grass(my favorite) are an immediate fix

Im working with Miscanthus Gigantus in combo with virginia pine after reading Bill's(moderator) threads

Thanks, I used a sorghum blend this year and it pretty much fell over with the first snow. Do either of those two hold up well in winter?

Not sure on the MG growing near walnut trees but it holds up great in the winter with wet snows, after the leaves are gone it looks a lot like small bamboo.
