Dwarf Chinkapin Oak

Acorns forming nicely. I think this one is a 2nd generation tree planted as acorn from my 1st generation trees about 10 yrs agoScreenshot_20250809_184918_Gallery.jpg

Nice! Did you cage or tube them? I’m planning on planting 15 or so and trying to develop a plan.

I need to plant some of these …

Fun tree for variety and early season acorns, but they are mostly just a novelty for me. I have over a dozen DCO trees and they will never produce enough mast to be a significant food source

I can grow them so they must be tough some beaches

They also produce early in life ( like my ACs)

bill

Do they tolerate Zone 4?

They grow naturally on my place in pretty much rocks next to the prickly pear cactus so they are perfect for places with almost no topsoil.

I have a very rocky spot picked out for them if they will tolerate cold. There's no cactus in Ontario though. A few websites have them listed for zone 4, but they might be lying. I'd love to know if anyone has them growing in zone 4, then I will plant at leat 25 of them immediately.

Looking online they maybe are good to zone four but I’d try a couple before I planted a bunch.

Agreed. What zone are you in?

DCO acorns filling out and probably will be dropping by end of Sept
