Does anyone know why?

When buck's antlers have oddities or drop tines, they are sometimes black in color once the velvet comes off?

I don’t know obviously but it’s interesting. In the case of the drop tine I would theorize that because of the gravity it collects an abnormal amount of blood there all summer causing it to “stain”.

I always figured it was something like that, but then I saw the tip of this one and started to wonder what else could cause it.

.Aggressive rubbing in the velvet stage sometimes leads to antler development damage involving the oxidation of blood. The blood sometimes gets mixed with tree sap. I have read that different species of rubbed trees color antlers differently.
