Did I kill new trees?

I purchased 4 new fruit trees (2 apple 2 pear) from tractor supply last fall. When I planted them I did not put any cages around them. I was looking them over a little yesterday and see that ALL new buds are gone on both types of trees. Will this harm them or just slow down their progress? I know cages will be in place for the next batch but to late on these for this winter, any thing else I should do with them?

No they shouldnt be toast. Just clip a few inches from the top of the tree and put a cage around it. When you prune the tip look at the piece you cut and if it's green and and not brown and brittle you should be fine. GET A CAGE!!!!
