Deregulating Suppressors?

I
I am looking forward to setting up what will likely be my last deer rifle, a Howa 6.5 Creedmore, with a can. Suppressors should be OTC items as in much of Europe, given their hearing and community benefits. Hoping that day will come soon, so prices will go down and companies will do ever more investment in sound suppression that supports accuracy.
I agree. It’s coming. Lots of companies have hopped in and are bringing lots of innovation.

A short little suppressed 6.5 creed is just about a perfect deer rifle. Be sure and post pics when you get it all set up, and let me know if you have any questions about what suppressor to buy.

So @SD51555 things have changed a bunch in the last year. You can get a really good suppressor that only adds 4-5” of length to your rifle. A 16” 308 with 5” of suppressor would be 21”, he would be shorter than 90% of the guns walking around in the woods.
UPS delivered this can an hour ago, merry Christmas!

18” barrel, 8” suppressor but half of that is behind the muzzle and half in front.

@365. This is exact can I would put on your new 6.5 creed. Made by a company called unknown suppressors. Called the OG6.5. Would fit your 6.5 creed like a glove and only add 4” of length. Go with a 16-18” barrel for maximum benefit.

@windygypsy is the man when it comes to rifles and shooting.

Came in under weight spec @7.2 ounces, with the LS wild cover on I got 8.1 ounces. Excited to give her a whirl. I’m tempted to go longer on this next barrel with this shorter can. It’s a considerable difference in overall length from the ultra 7 I used in the gun this year. Would allow me to burn less powder in something like a dasher or 6GT.

I’m not positive id recommend this can over the airlock zg 6.5. Probably a little louder, heavier but I’m hoping it heats up slower and has less back pressure.

You might have noticed me pointing out the S.A.W. suppressors on the slide. That is the actual OEM of the airlock cans and I believe they are able to use the same design tech (<- not sure they want this public?) so their 30 cal bolt gun can that is scythe/reaper sized is an attractive all around option to me as well.

Definitely fun time for new suppressor options/availability!

Form giving me a hard time over there bc I called him out a couple of days ago. Ha

*It makes your gun much longer, and awkward.

I had my barrel cut down and got an over-barrel suppressor to keep the length reasonable.

What's that suppressor called?

They have sales occasionally. Think mine was 25-30% off.

That one is similar to my Hausken in design. Bummer about the price. Looks like a great suppressor.

I’ve seen it said that most stateside suppressors are made better as they have traditionally been lifetime purchases that nobody would stand to live with if they were not reliable basically forever. Assume that’s overplayed to a degree and we’re just left with higher prices because the NFA has always made the market a PITA to do business in.

Would love to have the access and price points available in Europe, Africa, Australia, etc.

The quality of Norwegian suppressors is outstanding.

I assume the high prices in the US are due to several factors. The tax stamp creates a massive barrier for entry, meaning they are already a luxury product. Many companies in the US want or need to rate their suppressors for full auto or rapid fire, which we don't do in Europe. Experience is limited among American consumers, so the market doesn't get a lot of feedback.

i Expect the market to explode. I probably won't buy anything for a year or so. I hope to see a lot of new players in the market offering budget options. I don't see why US companies couldn't provide European quality at European prices. A dealer could probably make a fortune just importing European suppressors wholesale and marking them up 100% and still undercut every American manufacturer.

I mentioned it before, but I can get a suppressor in Norway for a third of the cost of the same type of suppressor in the US, and that is after the 25% sales tax in Norway. The prices in the US are just insane. I don't see how they can sustain those prices after the tax is lifted. Competition should knock prices down significantly, assuming the federal system can keep up with the tsunami of applications.
