DCO Questions

This is my first year planting Dwark Chinkapin Oaks.

Does this look like normal growth? They grow differently than other oaks?

Should I be pruning them to make them grow straight up vs the fork right at the ground?

One other question? Growing tubes or not for DCO?

Thank you for any suggestions.

I started some DCOs from see several years ago. I grew them in rootmakers for a season. They are pretty slow growers. They are more bushy than other oaks. I tried pruning some and let others branch out. I planted them. I did not protect them. They did survive, but they have not flourished. Growth slowed down dramatically when I moved them from my rootmakers to my native heavy clay soil.

I haven't been successful enough with them to provide any useful suggestions. I'm not sure if he is on this site, but a guy with the username Blitz had a thread on the old QDMA site that had a lot of growing instructions. I think he sells the nuts as well. You might do some digging and see if you can find him.

Thanks,

Jack

In my experience ,they are slow to grow the first 2 seasons in containers

I transplanted ~25 to the field this past winter dormancy after 2 growing seasons in containers at home.

They are very slow to break bud each year

Anxious to see how they do this season

The ones planted bare root in Dec '14 started producing fall '18 !!!

Here is a picture of one of my DCOs. As you can see it has had no care. No weed mat or protection. I just augered a whole and dropped it in. Other than flagging it with orange tape so I don't hit it with the mower, I've done nothing.
