Crabapple Varieties & guys' comments / input

I felt my cider press was not crushing crab apples sufficiently, so I put this together this morning. If it works OK, I will probably switch to a steel bowl or sink.

I also made a plywood spacer for the apple grinder that came with the press.

Those seedlings look fantastic, Art. All the apples appear to be the right size for deer to eat. And there's enough of them to make some cider !!

How in the heck do you find & grow so many really good crab apple seedlings ?? Crab apples are perfect size and even the leaves look clean.

I collected the seed years ago from some wild trees with larger crabs of at least one inch in size.

Very nice @sandbur , rewarding that you get to see the end result!

Frostbite is not really a crab. I did thin what I could reach.

Very nice!! Trees seem loaded but don’t appear to be that old of trees??

Great pics, that chestnut looks a bit rough lol.

Can anyone comment on dolgo taste? That 3rd leaf dolgo I planted at my old house before I moved is loaded this year, I did a drive by pruning on it this year bc it was growing three trunks and I couldn't let that happen :emoji_grimacing:

As a kid I grew up eating dolgos as it was the only apple we had. Throw the whole apple in your mouth and chew it up for the best flavor. The first one is a bit sour and then they taste great.

Dolgo makes great apple sauce with an almost cherry flavor. Pictured are dolgo and chestnut apple sauce. Both are great.

That chestnut is overloaded for the second year in a row and the central leader and limbs are pulled over. I needed to thin it but can’t reach the central leader anyway. Many of my trees look that way from too many apples, especially the crabs that get little care.

Sanbur, are these trees mostly for wildlife? Or do you use most of the apples? If they are mostly for the wildlife, on these younger trees, how do the deer get to the apples, being the trees dont hang over the fences? I have the same thing going on, and the apples just fall inside the cages, then I need to go out there and toss them out of the cage, or the deer and bear just shove the cages around to get at the apples, and damage the trees doing it.
