Cover Crop?

My first frost here in Connecticut is usually Oct 15. We have a good dose of rain coming Tuesday but, I still want to wait on my brassica planting of PTT, GHFR and Winfred. I want to wait to help with less insects and also radishes only need 45 days. So, I’m going to do a BOB mix of Alfa Rack plus which is clover, alfalfa and chicory. In the past with perennial plantings, I always waited to late August , early Sept and planted with cereal Rye. Is it too early to use the Rye now as a cover crop or what would you suggest. It’s going to be a TNM so Oats is out of the question for me. I don’t get good germination rates on TNM with oats. Any suggestions as a cover crop would be great. Smaller the seed, the better. At least I’m planting something so I won’t feel like the rain was a waste. Thanks

Oats and rye would be my nurse crop choice, I usually use oats up until early fall and rye after that.

I read an article which I can no longer find but in 2018 I planted WR early around August 11th because I wanted more growth. I had a bunch of the leaves turn brown. It looked like frost damaged oats. Turns out buckthorn can cause issues with WR if planted before September 1st. I don’t exactly recall what they called it but Buckthorn is a host for some form of fungus or bacteria. I will see if I can find the article again.

Where does one buy winter rye and / or oats / turnips to make their own fall blend cover crop? I plan to buy a little bit of the name brand mixes just to do some side by side comparison but no way am I buying enough Eagle Seed "buffalo blend" to plant 10-15 acres (I could easily plant this much)

A local feed mill (farming, cattle, & horse supplies) will carry the seeds you mention.
