Cleaning out this seed box

I got this seeder the other day. It has a bunch of crap in the seed boxes. Can I hose those out? Some of the stuff seems caked in there so I’m not sure how a shop vac will do

I have hosed out my Woods Seeder - looks very similar. Make sure it is a good sunny warm day and it will dry pretty quick. Afterwards, I spray wd 40 on the seed meters. Open them all the way and spray and close all the way and spray. Do not used pressure washer

I would guess a large air compressor with a "needle" tip gun would blow/blast most of that free as well.

Absolutely, vac and blow out the seed boxes. Sadly, no matter my end of planting clean up, something gets in there in there I need to clean out.

Shop vac is your friend to maintain it.

No problems spraying out with hose and letting dry in sun.

I would be careful using wet lubrication. I like dry silicone or graphite to use around seed cups.

I use regular lube like triflo on the chain and gears. Also mine has a couple of grease sockets.

The mechanism that adjusts seeding rate. The gates slide open and closed on these star shaped plastic gears.

On my woods seeder, the gears are metal. If I dont keep them lubricated, corrosion will make them difficult to adjust as needed. Yes, dust sticks to the gears lubricated with wd 40. I have used so called dry lubricant - dust also sticks to that. When I get done using mine, I hose those metal gears off an spray with wd 40. I always try to run all the seed out before putting it up for extended time. I can also open the seed cups on the large seed box and “drain” the seeds out. Make sure you close before adding more seed, or you will have a pile of seed on the ground

WD40 collects dust more than anything it does, for a penetrate-release agent use blaster.If you want to lubricate and not gather dust a lock spray might work

Those gears collect dust even if you spray graphite, blaster, or nothing. These are straight behind a disk gang. I bought the seeder slightly used. The seed meters were corroded in place. In fact, the person I bought from told me he was afraid to lube them for fear they would gather dust and then they seized up and corroded in place. I had a heck of a time getting them to move - and long hours with a brush on a drill smoothing them up. Now, whenever I put it up for extended period, I hose it off, and spray wd 40 on the seed meters. Has never had a problem since I started doing that. Been doing it that way for 12 years now
