Chicken of the Woods?

Catscratch

5 year old buck +
2 different mushrooms pictured, but i figure they are the same thing. I'm not familiar with Chickens so any advice would be appreciated!

And if they are chickens how's the best way to cook them?

They both look like chickens Cat, the one in the top picture looks old and waterlogged. My favorite way to fix them is in a breakfast scramble with sausage and eggs, they can be fried like morels too if they are really fresh.

Thanks Mozark! I ate some this morning. If it doesn't kill me I'll absolutely try that breakfast thing!

I'm not a mushroom expert. I only have picked morels. That top one does not look "right" to me. Did you eat that one?....or the bottom one??

I sampled the bottom one. The top one gave me the creeps so I left it in the woods like you do with creepy kids and puppies that don't potty train.

I actually thought it looked really young. It was small and firm, not big and mushy like I'd expect an old mushroom to be.

I've got lots of chicken of the woods and some puff balls on many occasions on my property. But, I never pick any as I am always unsure about them versus the non edibles. I suppose I should have learned how to differentiate these things.....alas. Even when we picked morels.....there were always a few that just didn't look right.....and I'd let them go.
