Chestnut/ persimmons

If I plant a couple of hundred seedlings of each is one more prone to deer browsing than the other if I don't get every last one of them covered I'm going to try to put them in the Briers and in tree brush. Thanks

Chestnut will get slaughtered.
Some people on here plant persimmon without protection. Mine get killed without protection but nearly as quickly as chestnut.

It really depends on your specific conditions. I need to protect chestnuts in my area. We have lots of native persimmons. I haven't had issues with deer bothering persimmon seedlings. I know others have had issues with deer and persimmons and do require protection. Of the two, I'll worry more about chestnuts in general. I tried the "Overwhelm them with numbers" approach and it did not work for me. I had to go back and add protection.

A deer will eat virtually ANYTHING that is actively growing and within it's reach. I have had deer destroy a 3 gallon chestnut that was nearly 6 feet tall and the diameter of your thumb down to a 18" tattered stick before. That was AFTER they removed the cage! I protect all my chestnut and persimmons like I do other fruit trees....but those are container trees as well.

thanks for the input..I don't want to start the debate of cage verse tube but it doesn't seem possible to establish a large planning without using tubes... So now which tubes haha l

Our deer tend to eat everything but there is plenty food in our logging areas to keep them busy most of the time. I might put a persimmon in the ground without a tube just to experiment.
