Cherry or plum?

Not the best pictures but I'm guessing cherry or plum there's some long spokes on the main trunk and the buds are exactly opposite on the tips it looks sort of like a deer hoof thanks

I’m going with plum based on the bark. Cherry would be a bit shiny.

Good thing you didn’t give me three choices :emoji_stuck_out_tongue:

It looks closer to the wild cherries found in MN than the wild plums. But it doesn't appear to be exactly like either. The branch structure looks a lot like buckthorn, but the buds don't quite look right.

You can clearly tell if it is buckthorn by cutting 1/4" in the bark. Buckthorn has an orange layer just inside the bark that isn't found on anything else around here.

My first thought was buckthorn too, my wild black cherries look a little different

As someone who has killed over 20,000 buckthorn trees I don’t think that is buckthorn. The bark or the buds don’t look quite right. I also can’t make out any obvious thorns. As mentioned scratch the bark with a key or knife and if it was buckthorn you will know right away. If it happens to be buckthorn immediety cut it off at ground level and treat with a 50/50 mix of 41% glyphosate and water.

Doesn't really look cherry to me, my wild black cherries have bark on them like dark potato chips and don't branch out like the OP's pics.

It’s the difference in maturity. Young cherries have relatively smooth bark.

By the time they are the size of my forearm they are black scaled bark here. I cut a few down today while feathering along woods, I should have taken a pick.

Looks more like a species of plum; however cherry and plum are very closely related (same genus). Wild plum often grow as thicket forming shrubs or small trees, while cherry is often singular trees that do not tend to root sprout or form thickets. Probably some exceptions to that rule of thumb.
