Chanterelles

Lots of chanterelles in the woods right now. Here's some from this a.m.

Cool. We found a bunch in June, we were bringing home 30+ lbs an outing. Pretty hot and dry here now.

Thanks for the heads up. I went today found a few chanterelles, but they were old. I did find my first hen of the woods. What else did you find?I'm on the IL/WI border do you think its to late for chanterelles?

I'm not sure what the timing would be for your area. I am in northern MN. We're finding lots of chanterelles in different areas. We also brought home some hedgehog, aspen bolete, and butter bolete mushrooms that we had with supper. We found some lobster mushrooms that we left. Also amanita(destroying angel-deadly), puff balls, bears tooth, plus many others that my wife rattled off the names of. She's the "expert" around here. Maybe from the recent rains but the woods are just loaded with mushrooms.

Do you guys ever get sick from eating the wrong mushrooms? Are there really mushrooms in Minnesota that would kill you if you ate them? I really like morels and I know I've seen tons of different mushrooms when in the woods but I don't know if I'd ever be sure enough on the ID to try any of them.

I've never been sick but we only eat a few that are easily identified like morels, chanterelles, certain boletes, hedgehogs, etc. My wife and I go on mushroom walks all the time and she knows her mushrooms. Does spore prints to help identify ones she's not sure of. She always pointing out ones that will make you sick or are poisonous, like the "Death Angel". Name speaks for itself!

Cool stuff! I'm hoping to get out in september and do some hen hunting myself. I wonder if puff balls are done. I know we have them at my dad's, but I always find them long after they're rotted.

SD51555, we found a ton of puff balls in good condition this past weekend.

I never got sick,but I don't risk it though either. I stick to about 7 kinds right now. The amanita that PRK mentioned killed 2 and sent 12 people to the hospital in Ohio when somebody made mushroom soup at a senior living center. This spring while looking for morels my son found what he thought was one. It ended up being a false morel, which are poisonous. My woods was full of them in rusk county. They really are something not to mess with if you don't know what your looking for.

We found some bears tooth last year. I think that's my favorite shroom. It tasted kinda like crab or lobster. They are really cool looking too. Talk about a mushroom that by the looks of it, you would not think would be edible, this is one. We had to get a ladder to get it down. It was up about 15 feet on a oak.

Couldn't agree more with you. Bears tooth is a very cool mushroom. We were on a "bears tooth mission" this weekend but only found a couple small ones.
