Caging Nuttal or Shumard Oaks?

Victor Van Meter

5 year old buck +
I am considering planting some of these varieties this Spring. Would they need to be caged? Thanks.

deer will generally browse oaks. I planted a grafted apple 2 weeks ago. The tube blew apart in the storm last week and those SOB's already nipped the top off of this thing. Jerks

I highly recommend tubes for oaks.

I planted 400-500 oaks all tubed my Nuttall’s have been the rock stars for first year growth over all the rest of the verities I planted. Shumard where also pretty good.

I'm a little further north of you guys. Straight shumard and nuttalls die back some each year for me. Shumard x northern reds and nuttall x pin oak crosses have done well, so far.

Thanks for the replies.
