Budwood from Grin

sandbur

5 year old buck +
Somehow my GRIN order got messed up and I will not be getting my scion.

They can ship budwood in August. Has anyoen tried that?

Will summer heat in the post office, or mailbox ruin the budwood?

U know the deadline? I'll try it on some of my failed crafts, which I'm sure I will have

Look in the other grin post greyphase posted the deadline in there

Dates and info from the GRIN apple catalog pdf download:
  • Orders for dormant scions (limit 25) must be received by January 10 in order to ship by March 20.
  • Orders for summer bud wood (limit 25) must be received by July 15 in order to ship by August 20.
  • Original apple seed from Kazakhstan is reserved for use by scientists doing genetic research. However we can supply open-pollinated seed from our grow-outs which are a blend of all genes from many sites in Kazakhstan. Deadline for ordering is January 10th.
Edit: they would also prefer you order scions for commonly available cultivars from commercial sources like fedco or maple valley.

From their website: orders for summer budwood must be received by May 1 and shipped June-August BUT it also says that dormant cuttings (scion) orders must be received by November 1 yet some on this board received scion ordered after this date so I don't know just how close they actually hold you to those dates.

Whoa: Looks like they need to update their webpages to all the same info.

I'd go with Lee's info.

Where did you all find these dates? I'm not worried about missing it for scions, but I ordered some seeds and I don't know what those deadlines are.

The dates may be different for different types of plants/germplasm. What was shown above is for apples. It is on the 1st page of the apple catalog. You can find it at this link. http://www.ars.usda.gov/Main/docs.htm?docid=10013 and I attach the pdf copy. Apple, cherries, grape come from Geneva, NY.

Pears and a bunch of other fruits/nuts come from Corvallis, Oregon. Their page said Feb 1 was the deadline to order scionwood and dormant cuttings from their collection (http://www.ars.usda.gov/main/site_main.htm?modecode=20-72-15-00).

You'll have to do some digging for other things at other germplasm sites. For other types of plants, I would recommend you find the repository that handles it and call/email them to find out exact dates for those. Here is a link to all of the repository homepages: http://www.ars-grin.gov/npgs/rephomepgs.html

I'll see what I can dig up!

I assume not recommended (?) but has anyone ever planted a random seedling knowing they were gonna graft to it later and t-budded it the first year during growth?

Scenario:

Rootstock planted 4/15, summer bud wood arrives in August and you t-bud to the rootstock you just planted in the April prior.

I planted 2 seeds from a DR tree in my orchard (the only one without fireblight). I'm planning on grafting them next year.

Yes you can. Not reccomended if the rootstock characteristics are important to you.
