Brassica Plot Weed ID

zb3446

Buck Fawn
My first brassica plot. Used a blend from a seed company. Apologies for not a great picture but any idea what this weed is taking over the plot already? Is it horsetail?

Soil was very wet all year. Until I planted and has been very dry since. Also need to use browse cages next year.

100% that is horsetail. It’s a free soil test. You need a little lime. That’s not a bad stand of it though. Bad is when they achieve canopy.

This is a bad stand of horsetail.

Did the soil test. Added lime and fertilizer as recommended. Clearly soil has a ways to go.

When i have a wet season on my poorly drained soils, horsetail comes on strong. It doesn't seem to outcompete desirable seeds for the most part but it does look like hell!

Have you tried gypsum? 😅

ha, i should try it! I actually bought a ton of bagged barn lime for a 1 acre plot that needs it worst a couple months ago but never got to menards to pick it up much less spread it.. "I'll do it next year.."

We put down ~200#/acre of the Menards stuff in WI this summer. I'll see how the soil samples differ next spring from this spring. We might do another application next year too.

When three conditions align, horsetail will dominate. It likes low pH, low oxygen, and high potassium.
