Best Mouse Trap Ever

Tree Spud

5 year old buck +
Was gone from the farm for 4 days and we had a cold snap. That means the mice look to move indoors. Got tired of putting out individual traps and tried many different repeating style mouse traps and none really worked that well. Want to stay away from poison as that can be a problem for animals and leads to flys.

Tried the RinneTraps Flip n Slide. It attaches to a 5 gal pail. You simply put about 2 gal of water in and bait the upper lid with peanut butter & a nut. The walk on the flapper and it tips them into the bucket. Caught 8 mice this past 4 days.

For whatever reason the mice have been really bad this year but us. I'm up to over 50 in my snap traps and homemade bucket traps.

I agree. In addition to the bucket, I had 3 in snap traps.

I did something close. 5 gallon bucket with a ramp. Empty peanut butter jar with rod shoved though it and bucket holding it in place. Tie wraps to keep centered. Peanut butter smeared on jar. Bucket filled with washer fluid to prevent freezing. Out 3 days and got more than 20.

I have that exact bucket-trap. Works well!

I've had to up my game recently. The bucket trap doesn't work on mice the size of your foot!

I have a lot of those pack rats on my property. They build nests (called middens) everywhere. In brush, at the base of a tree, several feet off the ground in a tree, etc. They've chewed the wiring on my tractor twice.

If you want to have some fun, I recommend a thermal scope and a suppressor on a ruger 10/22 charger (the pistol version), with an arm brace. Its short, manuverable, and nearly silent (with subsonic ammo). At night they spend a lot of time sitting on top of their nest, or close to it. Maybe they're further out from the nest but run back to the nest when they hear something, I don't know. I just know if I'm within 20 or 30 yards, there's a high chance they're sitting on top of the nest. We have 11 confirmed kills on pack rats in the last few months, plus more suspected kills.

Its a lot of fun to take some young boys out at night shooting the rats with a suppressor and thermal!

If I had that set-up you'd bet I would take the kids out! Sounds like a blast!!!

Very itnerested in this article. Trying to protect this guy this winter in my garage.

Work well on chipmunks also but warm weather stink quickly.

Cats. Nothing beats a good cat. We have two apex predators now, and mice problems are non-existent while the neighbor is replacing wiring harnesses in his new duramax.

So,

Whats the best bait? I mostly use peanut butter. I ordered those 5 gallon bucket traps. So, you can put more than something that is sticky. Was thinking popcorn, maybe oat seeds, and some peanut butter.

Someone mentioned catfish bait?

Been lucky past few years. Brake light wire on my ATV. They're been in the snowmobiles, but no wiring damage yet. Just nibbled on some foarm and nests. I put mothball bags n the sled and in the engine compartment of the car.

I keep bait station full of the good mouse poison. Chang type not brand when run low . Cuts mouse problems down 90%. Just don't use tomcat because it just fattens them up.

Seems like I read that they won’t stink if you put antifreeze in the bucket, instead of water. Can anyone confirm?

Just caught 3 in my garage last night, as I saw one run when pulling in. Usually never catch any. I have 5 bait stations around the house outside of my house, but never bothered filling them this year. Time to load them up this am. I'll reset the spring traps and my Rinne bucket trap too.

I'm pretty certain the stink attracts mice. I still catch mice if I have a floater and no bait.

The first year we moved to our place in the country I probably caught 40 mice in our house. A couple of young stray cats showed up and we started feeding them and the mouse problem went away. We went from 40 mice a year to 0. To keep the cats as close to my house as possible, I built a couple of cat houses that i keep on our deck.
