Awaiting graft results

Another happy recipient of GRIN scion. I also got great scion from Big Horse Creek Farm and Masonville Orchard in Colorado. Concerning Maple Valley I've gotten some nice scion from them and I've gotten some small scion.

Good to hear your having such good luck on your first go around. Of course you realize that next spring you'll have the "itch" to graft some more :D.

I did my highest number this year 82. Hope to plant 65 to 70 !!!!

I am already super excited for next winters scion swap thread!!!! Safe to say I have a sickness!!!!

You had to say it, didn't you Greyphase ?? You're probably right - I'll be itching to graft more next spring !! Jordan's got it too - already looking forward to next winter's scion swap thread. :D Maybe if I'm good, Santa will bring me more pots / trapper bags for next spring's grafts ??

My rootstocks / grafts are all in pots and will be spending the summer at my house where I can baby them and keep an eye on them. I'll be bringing them inside the garage for the next few nights like Aero mentioned. Supposed to be down into the 30's for 2 or 3 nights. But then a warm-up and back outside. How soon could I put them out on the south side of the house & into full sun ?? They've been on the north side and only get some sun in the last 2 hrs. of the day so far.

I got a few more in bags today and will get more tomorrow but mine will be going in this spring as soon as frost risk is done which should be a couple of weeks. The grafts I planted last year did amazing in the ground but I was able to water them almost every week during the summer. I think all but 2 will be waking up from last year even with the harsh winter we had

Were they planted in their final home Aero ?? ( last year's )

Yes they were and I will plant this years grafts on a line with them. I am using dwarf rootstock now and plant 6 to 7 ft apart

What kind of vertical growth is typical on grafted trees when planted ?? Never planted my own grafts before.

I have 43 grafts completed this year (10 pears, 25 apples on B-118 and 8 failed ones from last year that I re-grafted).

If planting the grafts in a "garden" type location... two questions:

1) How far apart should I plant the grafts?
2) When do you typically transplant to the final location... I'm thinking after 2 years, but is there an argument for doing it after the first year?
3) I'm assuming if I plan to keep them in the ground for 2 years, that I need to plant them a bit farther apart?

Thanks in advance for your wisdom!

Depends on if you can care for them weekly. I planted mine and I get there minimum every other week. I got 3 foot growth on my best grafts last year B n B.

I am planting 10 in 5 gallon root trappers and keeping an eye on them at the house. For the others, I will be able to check on them about once a week.

Thanks Aero, on the growth aspect of grafts.

By the way I also got some one inch growth too lol but most were between 18 inches and 2 feet with about 4 or 5 growing 3 feet

Great picture NH. What type of soil did you put in the bags?

I used the potting soil from Lowes 10.95 per 64 quart

My lab got a swat on the A$$ yesterday ev for grabbing one of my grafts an snapping it!!! Dang dog.. Always gets wound up when I get home an looks for attention. She got it alright!

I was away for a week and when I got back I saw the last of my grafts has opened buds now and leaves are starting to grow on all of them !! 6 for 6 - whooo-hooo !! Now if they grow well all summer long in their pots, they'll get planted next spring. Thanks to all on here for the guidance and info !!! :)

First time grafter myself, showing signs of life on 14 of 14 grafts, bad news is that about 25% appearing to be flowering buds as oppsed to growing vegetation so i'm bummed out about that.
