Artificial Intelligence

I would reiterate that it can re-write code or combine codes it can find on the internet. As your link shows it can "write the same routine in 12 top programming languages".

The advanced AI that can "think for itself" isn't available to us yet, it is in use but only to certain few and those few called for a pause because it was going beyond what they expected. AI can be helpful and very beneficial.... but it depends on who is in charge of it. If anyone thinks our government 3 letter clandestine agencies wouldn't use this for nefarious purposes, I would call that person foolish and naive.
The one saving grace I think we have is that wars are not fought to be won. If they were fought to be won, there'd eventually be thousands of terminators roaming the countryside. Thankfully, they're simple exercises in grift, and grift yields best when conflict endures.

Back around 1980 (young people - roll your eyes) Jimmy Carter was running for re-election, I think it was 1980ish. There was this editorial cartoon in the newspaper. That was back when news came printed on a paper. There was intelligence then, not much, but what were there was was real. I digress....
Anyhow, back to the newspaper cartoon. In it there were three presidents - George Washington, Richard Nixon, and Jimmy Carter.

The words (in the cartoon bubble- (remember those?) coming from each president's mouth:
Noble faced George Washington: "I cannot tell a lie!"
Tricky faced Richard Nixon: "I cannot tell the truth!"
Goofy faced Jimmy Carter: "I cannot tell the difference!"

Me and AI? I'm goofy faced....

I use one called genie on my phone. Ask I any herbicide or planting question and it gives a great answer. Searches internet for you and combines all the info into one concise thing almost instantly. I use it daily for stuff.

In all fairness I shouldn't say it isn't AI, technically we use AI daily whether we realize it or not. Spellcheck is AI, and so are the algorithms that hear you tell a friend in a conversation "I need a new frisbee because my dog tore up my old one" and suddenly you are seeing ads on your phone for a new frisbee when you otherwise wouldn't.

I just mean the AI we all have access to with Chat GPT isn't creating anything new or thinking for itself. It works off the internet, which is still very powerful since it can scrub the internet in seconds or minutes for information that takes me hours to compile if I am being thorough researching it.

I will be the first to admit, I know little about AI. But what would a store such as Sam's Club need a team of AI specialists for? My son's friend works as an AI specialist, and is paid very well for it. More then I would have imagined Sam's club pays anyone.

The more ANY kind of machines / automation eliminates jobs - of whatever skill level - the more we'll be going backward in time. Food, shelter, CLEAN water, and reliable electricity sources will come to the forefront. The more jobs are eliminated, the more important the necessities I just listed will become critical. The high-paying "tech jobs" that so many rely on today are targets for AI elimination. Good salaries going down the drain doesn't bode well for our economy - or any other country's either. This is a global problem. Many of today's machines can troubleshoot themselves and even repair themselves with previously included spare boards and micro devices. I've seen such machines in my career.

I can only wonder what today's younger crowd thinks about AI eliminating their jobs - after spending gobs of college money to acquire the skills they have now. Those in the high-tech fields & "office jobs" have to see the writing on the wall. IMO - AI will eliminate more jobs than can be replaced rapidly (cheaply?) to keep people fed and sheltered.

What is the reason for AI in the first place - the bottom line???????? To eliminate people's jobs / payroll. Play that scenario out to the end and see how rosy THAT picture is.

It’s Terminator in real life. Might take awhile, but it’s bad news long term (in my opinion)!

Usually they track spending habits.

I'm not worried about automation at all. Generally jobs do not become automated until it makes financial sense to do so, and automation is expensive. And guess what, automation creates jobs, usually better jobs than it replaces. Because of the decline in available capital, automation and technological development are likely to slow way down. Additionally, a lot of manufacturing jobs are coming back to the US from China. Of course this all means inflation is built in to the process, but if we are smart about our policies, we can bring entire supply chains back to the US and Mexico permanently. Globalization is ending, and the youngest generations of Americans stand to gain a lot in the near future.

"but if we are smart about our policies"

... and when has that happened, exactly?

Trump and Biden both have shown pretty good foreign policy, especially as it applies to China. If we get a decent president in office in the near future, we might see some decent domestic policies as well.

I don't share your optimism for politicians to do the right thing.

Trump knew China was trying to steel the silver out of the dining room Biden opened the door and showed China where it was stored in the dining room their policies concerning China couldn’t have been more different.

How so?

According to what I have read, Biden's administration basically continued Trump's hard line against China, and even ramped it up a notch or two.

I'm not sure what you're reading, but that's completely opposite of what actually happened.

I feel safe in my endevours……

I float horses teeth 4 a living.

some are barrel horses.

even AI knows that is not a wise decision!

I hope you're right, Telemark. I've seen automation in some factories that def. eliminated a bunch of jobs, and the number of people needed to maintain those automated systems is a lot less than had been employed before. Humans handling / loading finished goods won't pay as well as some of the manufacturing jobs where people actually had to have specialized skills to manufacture a product. The machinery that can troubleshoot itself and then throw an internal switch to change circuit boards or a different channel of a ladder logic PLC are what scare me. I've worked on installing the electrical systems in HUGE warehouses of over 1 million sq. ft. - they're mostly all automated. Robotic cars travel up & down aisles, scanning bar codes on shelves up to 40 ft. high. They load and unload themselves - no forklift drivers needed for that anymore. In warehouses that big, it only takes about 10 or 12 people to operate. The only guys on forklifts are loading product onto tractor-trailers.

The moves OUT of China - thank GOD!!! - are good moves by a number of countries. COMMUNIST CHINA'S authoritarian dictator's aggression toward Taiwan and other Pacific nations upsets world affairs / trade. The numbers of countries leaving China is a smart move strategically on the world stage, IMO, and moving businesses over to THIS side of the Pacific makes great sense from a geopolitical standpoint. WHY travel thousands of extra miles, burn GOD knows how much fuel / more pollution, put ships at risk of military attack / piracy - when we can have things in our own back yard?? We're paying for the fuel to ship all those goods in final prices. As you said, globalization is ending due to a number of factors (China's and Russia's crap largely), and folks around the world want jobs in their own countries. Who wouldn't????? Again (as you said), SMART is the key word to our trade policies going forward - ones that benefit ALL people - and not just the well-connected few. I certainly would like my kids and grandkids to have a bright future - here in our U.S.A.

Trump knew China was trying to steel the silver out of the dining room
How was Trump tough on China when he couldn't praise Xi Jinping and his method of government (COMMUNIST AUTHORITARIAN DICTATOR) enough?? Trump may as well have been on his knees under Xi's desk. Same way he acted toward Putin. Trump STILL praises Putin whenever that subject comes up. He says he could stop the war in Ukraine in one day. How?? By handing Ukraine over to Putin, stopping the U.S.A.'s military support - telling the Ukrainian people they need to recognize Russia's "right" to annex their country???? (REMEMBER what Hitler did in Eastern Europe back in the 1930's??? The world should have stood together RIGHT AWAY, and shut down the military aggression by Hitler. With Putin's similar aggression in Ukraine ........ did we not learn a TOUGH LESSON regarding such authoritarian dictatorial aggression????? At least Biden is sending military arms (along with many other countries!!) and systems that have stymied Putin's attempted takeover of Ukraine. France's plan of "appeasement" to Hitler by signing a worthless treaty with him failed 100% - and Great Britain's foreign minister at the time wanted to do the same as France did. Thankfully - Winston Churchill's plan of all-out war against Hitler's Nazi regime won the day ......... and together with most other countries - WE WON WW ll . )

All the other NATO countries - including some new additions - are on the side of Ukraine, and AGAINST Russia. We aren't the only ones in the world standing up against both China and Russia. I believe those other countries learned what WW ll taught them.

That's why the Biden admin allowed a Chinese spy balloon to travel across the US for 10 days surveilling major military & industrial complex's? 🙄
