Applying Boron

Has anyone applied boron before? My soil test came back at .5 PPM and should be about 3.0ppm. I bought a bag ( 50lb) of 15 per granular boron. Does anyone know the correct amount I need to apply per acre? I know applying too much can be toxic and I realize it will take a small amount to bring it back in check. Thx

I ran borax through the leaf blower for a few years. Don't any longer. Nothing went wrong, I'm just trying to dial it all back to see what happens. I ran 16 lbs of 11% per acre and got away with it.

Parts per million. We don't have a scale big enough so we assume (and research has shown) on average there's a million pounds of soil in a three inch slice of an acre. We usually fertilizer to impact the top six inches. For practical purposes, day-in and day-out in an acre, that's 2-million pounds of soil. Your soil test indicates there is currently 0.5 ppm or half a pound in a million lbs - 1.0 lb in the top six inches of soil. You need 6 lbs of boron to get to 3 ppm. Have I confused you yet? 6 lbs divided by 2,000,00 lbs = 3ppm. By your soil test you already have 1lb and need to add 5 more lbs - of elemental boron. Your fertilizer grade born is about 15%? Then, straight out of the bag you will apply 33 lbs per acre (15% multiplied by 33 = 5). This assumes you want to theoretically aim at the top six inches and that you sample the same depth.

By the way, if my memory is still in tact, boron s fairly mobile in soil and getting it into the top 6-inches should be no problem even is surface applied.

Thx guys for replies . Dan, I do get it, but had to read it over a few times. It was very helpful. For others reading this, if your applying boron to your soils , do not apply at seeding . You don’t want the seed to come in contact with the boron. It should be applied a week or two prior to seeding and I’m assuming you want a rainfall to absorb it in if your applying granular. This is just what I read since reading up on it. I knew brassicas needed boron , especially turnips, so I been reading more and more into the micronutrients. It can be very toxic by over applying , but not so much if you have sandy soils as it leaches easily. I’m glad I read up on it too because I would have applied at seeding. I guess it hurts germination rates if applied at seeding. Just trying to save guys some trouble if they apply boron. Thx

Best answer ever on the Forum. End of story, not close seconds. Hands down unanimous winner! Perfection. Well written, correct, and articulated in a manner my 7 year old nephew could understand.

What about applying boron after germination?

According to the article online from Michigan St and this is written in regards to Soybeans : “ However, liquid fertilizer can be applied with post emergence herbicide applications. To avoid leaf burn, foliage boron application rates should be less than .5 pounds per acre and do not spray when temperatures are high and the crop is under moisture stress.”
