Hi Freeborn,
I have property close to you, about 6 miles east of Carlos. I am starting apple tree planting next spring with Antonovka rootstock. Is there any chance of getting some scion wood from you to start grafting with? I am totally new to grafting/ planting apple trees

Anything is fine, I want to get as much variety as I can at this point. I don't have any apple trees on the property now

I am happy to hear you will be planting apples on your property Wintomatic, I know you will enjoy the watching them progress and produce over time. My only suggestion is to consider also planting some bare root trees from a reputable nursery. If you get some larger bare root varieties, on say an M.111 or B.118 rootstock, they will likely produce years ahead of your Antonovka grafts. It's a lot of fun to watch each tree progress, but it's also nice to see at least some apples being produced after a few years in the ground. Just a thought... good luck no matter what.

If you are new to planting apple trees, remember the cost and labor involved in properly fencing and protecting them.
It is easy to get carried away if your time or money is limited.
I prepped my ground and soil tested this last summer. Cages are cut and are close to the planting location.
Agree, plant a few trees from a good nursery and have fun grafting.

Wintomatic, I get you are enthusiastic and ready to hop in. But you don't want to plant just anything for the sake of diversity. Get a plan figured out. Which locations are you planting? Which locations will you hunt? When? How will you hunt each location? How many trees at what spacing? What is the purpose of the trees (eating, cider, deer)? Will you spray? Do you have red cedars? What times do you want apples on the ground. What varieties meet your goal at each location,
You want a good strategy before you start ordering or planting. Are you going to make it more huntable? Or harder to hunt? And some apple varieties will be a waste of space, money, and time depending on your goals.

I have 100 cages from a previous hybrid chestnut planting. Unfortunately the spring after I planted them we got a freak hard freeze in the middle of may just as they were starting to pop leaves. Killed almost all of them, and pocket gophers got the rest! We have trapped about 500 of them in the last 4 years.
I have a plan for planting and spacing and the areas I want. I will deep rototill before planting and the soil is a rich sandy loam. Soils tested last year.., all good to go. We planted about 40 acres worth last year.I will be planting whips so it will go quick as we make those things family events (manditory for thise that hunt). Have a 500 gallon tank on a wagon that I can draw waterout of the Long Prairie river that goes through the front yard.
For now my goal is to get my rootstock established and get proficient at grafting.

No, I have 0 apple trees right now. I have about 30 acres of corn, about 3 acres of the dble tree rotation, and the rest is a few acres each of rr beans/ rr alfalfa. I decided to plant crops for a few years to kill off the old crp brome grass. I will be putting about 10 acres of switchgrass and/wsng’s depending on the farm bill to see if I can get into CRP. (Long story but the land was kicked out of CRP program and my uncle had to sign a permanent reduction of acreage. I have only been reporting crops for 3 years.)
