Apple tree damage, what?!

Geez Paul! Yes once they are tall enough to remove the fencing i'll probably comw up with somethink like i seen in Ireland where they had steel fencing tight to the trees to protect from red stags..

That would be advisable. No bs a tree in the open is buck rub meat

We plan on just letting our trees caged. Once the trees are bigger, they'll drop apples outside the cages anyway ( they're only about 4 ft. dia. ). We don't need to get inside to cut grass ( it's all landscape cloth and limestone gravel ), so we'll let 'em caged for the extra protection. ;)

I agree that it is deer sticking their head through the openings in the fencing. I have had the same problem with the smaller trees that I planted and sometimes have resorted to wrapping welded wire around the original fencing to make the openings smaller or increasing the diameter of the fence. Once my trees get tall enough, I decrease the fence diameter to about 18" just to protect them from rubbing bucks.
