Another Planting Milo Thread

SwampCat

5 year old buck +
I have planted milo in mixes before, but have never planted milo solo by itself. Is there any secret to it. I want to use it for deer and ducks - but will the deer eat it all before early winter flooding. I would prefer a shorter milo like WGF sorghum - because of water depth in flooded areas - but have heard it does not seed as reliably as commercial milo. What seeding rates and fertilization rates do you recommend?

I used commercial Milo this year and had good success with it. I was using my JD 7000 planter on 30" rows and planted a population of 40,000. I fertilized with 100lbs/acre of urea when I planted and top dressed with another 100lbs/acre when seed heads started to develop. Stand was great! The plants are mid-thigh to waist high and produced full seed heads. There was some good deer browsing at the dough stage, but most of the stand made good seed. Just in the last month as its gotten really cold the deer have begun eating the seed heads again, so I think it would suit you well.

What herbicide schedule did you use - if any?

I did preplant with Enlist Duo since it was the border of a soybean planting. The beans were planted right away and the milo was about 3 weeks later I think around June 1st. I did a mid to late summer spraying of 2,4-d. I don't remember the exact date, but the milo was a little taller. I heard 2,4-d can damage young plants if it pools in the whorl so I tried to avoid that. I mostly did a ton of reading on AgTalk. Was a touch weedy, but perfectly fine for my purposes.
