And That's When The Fight Started...

Picked the thread title as I normally find "And that's when the fight started..." jokes humorous. That shared, honestly DON'T know why the fight started, making the footage even more intriguing.

Spot where the camera captured the fight is a travel trail and has no bait, minerals, or much in the way of natural forage to fight over. As the video shows, few does simply moving by the camera... and about a single minute later, it looks like some small buck entered the equation and an older nanny doe wasn't the least happy about it.

Anybody else wish to chime in on what they might think happened, be interested in hearing it! Have caught bucks sparring many times on camera, and does doing lighter "fist" swinging to one another to move each other away from desired food or minerals, but first time I've captured quite as seemingly-serious a "fist fight!"

I’m reaching here but spring is in the air. At least down there it is! 15 degrees at my house this morning and I have it good. You may have just gotten video of a mother running her button buck offspring to the next county. I’ve read they will chase them off prior to this years fawning naturally to prevent inbreeding.

That’s my theory anyway since there is no food to argue over.

That thought crossed my mind, Bill, and guess they have to be convincingly tough... hard to see but at one point in the clip it looked like she pulled her gums back and gave a full on devil teeth-baring grimace at him... kind of reminded me of Debra in the "Everybody Loves Raymond" Bad Moon Rising video I shared week or two ago! :emoji_wink:

Also wondered if could have been a young buck looking for love in all the wrong places... maybe trying to check out one of the really young fawn-does in the group and Mama doe didn't take kindly to the move. And guess that doesn't preclude it could have been her own buck son being the buck in question. Guess that'd fit perfectly with the anger / running him off!

Deer vie for dominance year round. As long as someone knows their place in the pecking order, then everything stays calm. But crap happens year round.

No doubt, Tap! Just this one was a bit different than vast majority of encounters I've captured.

Since moving to my place five years ago I've saved just over 31,000 game camera captures with vast majority video clips.

I especially see challenges at two mineral stations I run where I keep mineral blocks sunk in hollow stumps I cut just low enough to hold the blocks / help keep bears from rolling them around. If 2 or more bucks / 3 or more does arrive at a stump at the same time feint charges from the dominant deer are all but guaranteed, and just as you said that's absolutely year round. Of thousands of encounters captured at these spots, none have escalated to true fights though... mostly just inolve a single lunge, chase for a few feet, or in the case of does often a SINGLE jump kick with less apparent intent to harm then simply move the offending subordinate deer off.

Think I've captured three or four what might be called "dancing" fights between does, but even with those they appeared to be more show than actual fight with a bit of distance between the standing does and most of the bicycling-pedal punches just windmilling through the air versus landing.

Even among my buck fights captured, majority are sparring / neck workouts versus escalated fighting.

May be more commonly seen outside my deep south neck of the woods, just was a surprise to see an adult doe go at a young buck so hard / first time I captured it.

To me it looks like the deer closest to the camera is a buck. Appears to have pedicles or something on top its head.

Deer closest to the camera definitely is sporting at least one small horn on its right side, and about equally sure deer further from camera is an adult doe. Deer sporting bone did not show in the doe / fawn group that peacefully crossed camera exactly a single minute earlier, so not sure how he entered the equation.

Not that I think it's worthy of watching like the Zapruder film, LOL, but think few frames show horn on right side of closest deer / bare pedicle base on left, show deer further back is missing any male hardware (no testes nor antlers or pedicles), and can even see small buck's antler is broken in one of the frames though almost sure was already broken before mama-san opened up a can of whoop-a$$ on him. Again, one of the things that made it a rather unique capture... can't instantly recall capturing a doe delivering quite a heated exchange with a buck before, though to Bill's earlier point know that does have to chase offspring bucks off... just had never witnessed it before.

Was hoping for some good wife stories on here....My latest...and there are many. We went to a kids birthday party and when we walked in there was an absolute gorgeous woman there... Gorgeous face...Body the whole package.....My wife by far is no slouch...She was Miss Delaware and a Ravens cheerleader for about 5 years. Anyhow...Its obvious these two know each other and they chat away...When we leave she tells me that she had beat that lady during the Miss De. pageant...My responds "you two are the same age????"...She claims it wasn't what I said but the way I said it.

You’re correct. I didn’t notice the antler. Just thought I saw a bare spot. Based on that I’d say not running off a fawn just kicking the crap out of a young buck....

Nope, doesn’t matter “How” you said it. What matters is how she heard it. I do a poor job sometimes but after 24 years I try my damnedest to think ahead and keep my mouth shut!

My favorite/memorable blunder was very early on. Wife and a girlfriend decided they were going to start walking because they wanted to be as thin as another friend of theirs. She was borderline anorexic! Without hesitation “or thought” I blunder out “How far are you going to walk?” It’s laughed at today but man that was dumb at the time :)

How does your wife and your girlfriend get along so well?

Ha! Her girlfriend. Guess it’s important to be clear about theses things.

Cool video! Thought of your thread title when I was flipping through new card pulls this week. In the case of this fight, which seems aggressive for late January, I think they may have been fighting for the right to eat in this little corner of clover. I've seen them get a little territorial when scratching in the snow. Who knows though.

Gosh it’s funny they are the only deer to leave tracks in the field :emoji_scream:
