1st leaf Dolgos producing

I have a couple Dolgos I planted this spring, that are maybe 6 feet tall, maybe a little more. I think they have more apples on them then leaves, which isn't many. One tree has about 20 apples, the other has about 10. I was going to snip off the apples, but a nursery told me just to leave the Dolgos produce what ever they want to produce. What are your thoughts on that?

Personally I would have picked the apples off a long time a go. Those fruit are taking a lot of energy, especially for a tree that has very little way to make energy (lack of leaves). Did they ever have much for leaves?

I'm finding that I need to control Japanese beetles for the first couple years with all my seedlings. After that, the trees seem to be able to handle the insect pressure. I'm not sure if that will be true for apples since they are only a couple years old now but it has held true for my other seedlings.

I planted them bare root, and they had no leaves then. They never really put on much for leaves since, I never bothered to look at them for apples, just because they were so small. What is your thoughts now? Snip them? Or let them ride it out and see what happens?

Personally, I'd snip 'em and let the tree focus on putting on leaves, not fruit, this year. Just my 2 cents.

Take the apples off and let the energy go to the plant

snip the apples - they can stunt the growth the next year if there are too many apples too early. Let the trees grow a few years and develop a solid frame before you let the fruit stay.

I've occasionally not listened to my own advice and left fruit on young trees and it seems like they are stunted a bit the following year.

Yeah, I'm in the snip camp. I even pinched all the blossoms from my second year trees, rather have roots, wood, and leaves at this point!
