    Establishing new plot in spring

Makes sense with the rye and what I was planning for this fall. The oats i had read very similar stuff to what you mentioned, but was stubborn and wanted to see what would happen. It's been interesting to see the east side of the plot is doing much better than the west side of the plot. All...

    Bluehill 2025

I ordered 2 sweet advent, 2 hunters deer pear, 1 szukis persimmon and 1 tin cup persimmon. The persimmons are more if an experiment but overall I am very happy with the trees I got from BH. One pear was slow to wake up and both persimmons were slow but we've had good rain of late and all trees...

    Establishing new plot in spring

For an update on this one. I got a soil test that came back and confirmed low pH (5.1). Early this spring is added 1500 lbs of lime to the plot, which was just lower than what the test recommended. I figured i will test again and add more lime this fall if need be. After that I sprayed with gly...

    Establishing new plot in spring

I am going to get a soil sample in the spring once I can get at the soil. I'm guessing it's going to need some lime.

    Establishing new plot in spring

Lots of good stuff in here. Thanks. I ordered oats, Peas and am going to incorporate Crimson clover for the spring planting. Hoping it takes and then I'd likely terminate and had planned on putting in winter rye with a perennial clover mix in the fall to hopefully get a head start on clover for...

    Establishing new plot in spring

I have a new plot that was cleared this winter. I have not tested the soil but the soil is sandy. Previously the area was a mix of oaks, tag alder, dead ash and red cedar. I am assuming ph is low but will need to confirm with a test. I am wondering what would be a good cover crop to establish...

    Replacing dead ash trees

Interesting. Was the shearing suggested to trigger more tag alder regeneration or other species?

    Replacing dead ash trees

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm in south central Wisconsin and I think I still have time to put in an order with our DNR and it looks like they still have most of these species available.

    Replacing dead ash trees

I was not planning on cutting them dow. They are pretty far gone so just figured I would leave them.

    Replacing dead ash trees

Makes sense. I am planning on clearing some out this winter yet. Would be great it I could knock it down and have ROD be more prevalent but am planning on adding some other trees/shrubs to the mix

    Replacing dead ash trees

Not necessarily set on trees, but would like to incorporate some. The terrain is lowland swamp that's a mix of tag alder and red osier dogwood mostly with some oaks and poplar mixed in. It has humps that are dry but it's wet in spots too.

    Replacing dead ash trees

Been reading a lot in this forum but first time posting. I recently bought a property that has a good amount of dead ash trees on it. One area in particular is a point that jets out into a tag alder swamp. All of the ash trees have died and I am wondering what kind of trees to plant to replace...
