Being that you are in southern Illinois you have plenty of options. I’d go with radish, turnips, berseem clover, followed by rye in about 3 weeks.

Overseeded a soybean plot yesterday with crimson clover, berseem clover, groundhog radish, purple top turnips, and cereal rye.

I'm considering overseeding my bean plot with rye, crimson, and radishes this weekend. They haven started to turn yellow yet but the deer have them topped a fair amount so I think there will be enough sunlight to get them going. They should start to turn in the next 2-3 weeks.
For reds I like Freedom MR
White I like Alice
Annual I like frosty berseem
I’m also trying crimson for the first time and hoping I can get blanda to take this fall as well. I tried frost seeding it a couple of years ago but it was mostly a flop.

Got my last two plots in this week and caught a couple of good showers. Only thing I have left now is overseeding a few plots with cereals. Probably do that the last week or so in September. Will depend on the forecast.

I go about 3-4#/acre but I also mix mine with berseem clover and winter peas @10 and 50#/acre. Then in mid to late September I broadcast about 110#/acre of winter triticale. I want to make sure I have plenty of room for other stuff to grow. I have found over the last couple of years I get...
The money part doesn't bother me. With the about 2 acres of plots that we have I spend well under $500 per year. I'm looking into upping my soil amendment game to see if i cant get a little better attraction out of them. In a rich Ag area there isn't any shortage of food so the soil may have...
Turns out that it isn't going to be to bad to amend the soil. They gave me the recomendation of 8000#/acre to get to about a 6.0 PH
The plot is only about a 1/4 acre so 1 Ton of ag lime. The quarry that the best AG lime in our area come from is only about a half hr away. In about 20 days the...
