Are mature deer comfortable using an open orchid in daylight? I’ve wondered how important shrub cover is in an orchid, I feel like most of the photos I see of mature deer eating fruit are night time photos.
I don’t believe it helps grow faster. Less support will develop a stronger trunk from the wind. But a stake will ensure a straighter trunk if the trees roots aren’t established yet.
I don’t either, just step them down well, but the biggest bare root I’ve planted is only 3-4’. If you do something with a lot of weight on the top 1 year is plenty for it to get rooted in.
I guess it depends what your protecting against. If you have bears in your area, I’d think the cage should be permanent. I’ve wondered the same thing with oak trees and tubes. I’ve planted ~300 so far and wondered if any one slips the tubes off after they reach 8’ + out of browse height. The...
How is your success rate? If the soil is wet and the roots are wet it would make sense that they do not need to be watered in. Aside from helping with air pockets I guess.
I always do, I keep a 5 gal bucket of water with me, put 2-3 plants in bucket, dig holes and when I pull one out of bucket I place a new one in. I’m 47/48 with bare root so far. Keeping my fingers crossed the luck continues.
It says standard rootstock. Some of the other ones I received look better, but those curved bottom large roots have me a little concerned they they seem to be growing upward rather than down or lateral to anchor the tree.
I received a shipment of fruit trees, it looks to me like the root flare should be at the red arrow I drew in. It appears it was replanted deeper and formed smaller fibrous roots out of the trunk. My concern is that the large root flare roots are curving back up to surface due to being planted...
I’ve purchased from blue hill and have had 98% success on 50 trees, they are out of persimmon but still have pear trees. I have heard good reviews on white tail crabs. they sell pears too
Question on the phrase "Build it and they will come". I understand the concept of passing deer, if they are happy with the habitat they will have no reason to leave and can grow old. But if I built the best habitat in the area, wouldn't a new mature alpa be drawn to move in to replace one that...
