    At what age can you let deer safely browse them without killing the plant? I was hoping that after about 3 yrs I could uncage them and the deer would just eat new growth (similar to pruning) but leave the main older stalks alone preserving the plant...too optimistic in area with alot of winter...

    I am going to do this. Not sure about the landscape fabric though....seems like the fabric would encourage voles to live there and chew up the dogwoods especially since they are caged.
