    Burdock in clover

Thank you very much for the help, it's incredibly insightful. I'll try some more lime and add a little gypsum and see how things go, meanwhile I will keep up with whacking the burdock when it gets larger.

    Burdock in clover

Here's the test for the plot, its slightly under a quarter acre so it won't too expensive to mess around with it.

    Burdock in clover

This plot was a pastured part of the woods years ago so compaction could be a problem. I have only applied amendments as the soil test called for it, never tried extra gypsum, is this just spot applied to spots of heavy burdock or over the whole plot? Thanks for the chemical suggestions, I might...

    Burdock in clover

Has anyone ever had trouble with Burdock in plots? I have a pretty bad case of it in a second year clover plot and am considering spraying everything, tilling, and starting over but I'm worried it will come back. Ive been told there's no herbicide for it if mixed with clover because they're...

    Patch cut areas

Leaving tops is something more loggers/foresters are doing in heavy deer areas in WI for the purpose of oak regeneration. Pulpwood is also difficult to get rid of right now so it's often done to save the landowner and logger money. MFL plans are fairly flexible with DNR approval so long as its...

    Food Plot Architecture

I should add each plot would have a different planting for different parts of the year (early fall, late fall/winter and winter/spring).

    Food Plot Architecture

Looks good! Mine will be put in this year and I still have some designing to do but I'm thinking of doing an E shape with corn rows separating each plot. Ideally I would have 3 plots of roughly an acre with all three surrounded by the corn and an edge of native plants separating the plots from...

    Early tree planting this spring?

Too cold here in central WI yet, we still have a few feet of frost and it's froze pretty good every night. Not sure I could get a shovel in more than a couple inches.

    Native tree seedling starting

Do those lights provide heat as well or is it just light and room temp is enough? Like oakseeds said I think I need more heat for my acorns. It seems that milk jugs in the window sill inside isn't enough.

    Native tree seedling starting

Awesome! Are those chestnuts under a grow light indoors?

    Native tree seedling starting

I did not know that about the chestnuts, thank you. I know its unlikely mine will survive as well but I guess you never know, and they're fun to experiment with. My butternuts were picked from a healthy local parent tree but I know there's probably little hope for them. I have seen some healthy...

    Native tree seedling starting

Looking good! It's possible that my SWO's aren't getting warm enough in the jugs by the window, hopefully longer days will help too.

    Native tree seedling starting

Photo 1 is a chestnut sprouting after meeting some soil, picture 2 is one of my stubborn SWO acorns.

    Native tree seedling starting

It's getting to be that time of year to start some seeds indoors, especially stratifying some native plants and trees. Still a little cold here in WI but I've got a few dozen milk jugs outside with some native seeds stratifying in them. Back inside, I've got some American chestnuts sprouting...

Chicory filling an important time gap for me

Does anyone plant chicory in the spring with clover and grains when establishing a plot? I've heard most often to plant it in fall to overwinter but I'll have all summer for the plot and chicory to grow.
