When using the 3358 with a J series, the externals and internals have the same voltage so they run together. When using the 3358 with a G series, the externals go first and when the voltage drops low enough, it will switch to the internals because of the voltage difference between 6 Ds and 4 Ds.

This is the one I use. Inexpensive and does a fine job testing batteries including the full circuit of the 3358 D booster. I don’t mix brands either. I’ve been sticking with the Rayovacs and have had good luck with them. Haven’t found a bad battery yet. But probably will now that I said that!
