    Best no-spray foot plots?

I guess I never got the memo - Why do you need to spray to create food plots? If you have a tractor and a disc, you can create any plot. I disc in plots every year, never use a drop of herbicide. Cereal grains, brassicas, annual and perennial clovers, Milo, beans, early successional strips...

    Value of pin oaks?

Pin oak is a just an oak in the Red Oak family. Acorns are higher in tannin, so not as preferred by deer (as white oak for example), but they definitely still eat them.

    Switchgrass

+1. Narrow strips make it very easy for predators. You want min 20 yards wide if possible.

    Broken front leg survival?

I’m continually surprised how well they do. Tons of coyotes in my area and had 2 different bucks survive for years. One had a broken front leg and the other got hit by a car as a yearling and had a dislocated hip. They move slow but nothing seems to bother them..

Fertilizer Recommendations based on Soil Test

Given your acerage I’d do the custom blend @FarmerDan recommended. Spread in at planting time and then plant away! If you’re stuck using bags (for those on smaller averages), bags of 6-24-24 or 6-28-28 gets you close, then maybe a couple bags of red potash 0-0-60 as Dan mentions. Be sure and...

Management plan review - input for food plot locations

Building on what Tree Spud mentions… With that small of a property I’d want one single food source, located nearer to the exterior of the property. Turn the interior portions with poor access to bedding/switch/early successional habitat.

    Sorghum Screen Fail thoughts

Straight EW does about as well as Sudan. My EW a rough year drought wise but still managed to recover. Seed heads are about 8’ in the below pic. Disced in with 20# of N and walked away. Upland Med Soil - nothing special. I’m going to toy around with some Silage BMR varieties that don’t get...

    Corn plot

Mow as soon as the season ends, to maximize the breakdown of residue. If your drill is heavy, just no til thru the stalks the following spring and you’re good to go.

What is the mental dynamic involved

Some good points here. For a lot of guys.. Ego. Want to brag to everyone they “got their buck” this year. About checking the box. These are also the same guys that complain they don’t see any big bucks.. Can’t cure stupid.

Food Plot Nitrogen Fertilizers - Does it matter?

Interesting discussion. Bound to get a few panties wadded up here, but I'll play.. 1) Huntability: For me, It's all about yield. Since I have a given acerage to work with, I want to maximize 1) The herd carrying capacity of my property 2) The herd health of my property and 3) Have the most...
