What is this and how can I kill it?

I don't know what this thick grass-like crap is. It has taken over one of my small food plots and it seems to laugh at Gly/AMS. I don't know my weeds or grasses and seek advice from you experts.

Horsetail. When you figure out how to kill it you will be a rich man. It spreads like wildfire when you start doing tillage to it. Loves poor drainage and lower PHs I think.

Thanks for the quick reply. It all started last year when I used a drag harrow on this small plot because I was planting some larger seeds and I wanted to drag it and then roll it over. I normally throw and roll only. I have sprayed the crap out of it with Gly/AMS and it looks like it is going to work and then comes back with a vengeance. Not sure what I can do now.

BTW, the ph in that plot is 7.0 but it is poor drainage.

You need to find out if it .truly is a grass, try 24D or maybe liberty just to see if it needs a weed killer.Did you mix surfactant with your gly

Yes, I always mix AMS with my Gly. I use Cleth on grass in my clover plots and 24DB for weeds in my clover plots. I use GLY/AMS when I want something fried. It looks like Gly is doing the job on the horsetail after spraying but it roars back.

You just stumbled into my wheel house. I was the national champion horsetail/thistle grower in North America for a couple years running not long ago.

You've got blank space between yours. Yer not so bad off. Quit trying to kill it, switch to mixed perennials, and broadcast a hot rate of forage barley in there as soon as daytime lows stay above 20 degrees in spring. Every time you spray it, you're just taking out it's competition. Once you get a mix going, you'll still have some, but it won't be near as prevalent. I quit spraying and switched to clover/chicory/cereals and a stiff shot of lime, and now I've got to search to find it in my plot.

Thanks for giving me a plan of attack. I have no experience with barley. Will it be eaten and will I be able do a fall plot of winter wheat, clover, and oats like I have been doing (was better until the HT took hold) or would I have to kill the barley?

Barley is great in the north for a short season cover. You can mow kill it 8-10 weeks after it germinates. I'm in zone 3, planted April 12th, and could have mow killed it by July 1st. If you get a forage (awnless) barley, you really won't have to do anything at all.

It doesn't produce huge biomass like the rest of the cereals, and the deer will probably eat the heads if you're not in soybean/alfalfa country. I mowed July 25, and it was completely gone by then. I think they took the heads, and the straw just tipped over and got consumed by the clover.
