New Project

Put in the last of the fish structure under the dock today. Built some half size plastic trees this morning so they don’t stick up to far to bother swimming. Crappie and redear should hang out under it and make for some good fishing.

They lock you up for shooting them with rifles here!
Wardens are real fussy about federal migratory game birds.

We have the two ponds over at the other farm that ducks&geese are in all the time, don’t know how much waterfowling the wife would put up with on this one with our house being next to it.
I think it will be fun to watch the ducks and geese right from my front porch here someday.

Ah well I guess that's why it's not a thing there. Nice to have stuff to watch too.

I have a bunch of doves and woodcock that fly around over the neighbor's land on the other side of the fence. Kinda cool to have birds just for watching.

Your woodcock over there are a lot bigger than ours, those would be very cool to see.
What kind of doves do you have there locally?
How’s that new pup doing? Have you been working him with birds at all.

Even forgetting the reality, we have the ethics question...

Wood doves. They're huge.

Haven't had time to do much training, but I work with him a bit with Ptarmigan wings and pointing woodcock on a long line. Wasn't able to get to the US to buy a bird launcher and other training equipment, because of Corona. He points well but has trouble staying on point. He waits until he hears me walking toward him and then dives in before I give the command. Season opens in a few weeks so we'll see what he manages.

Looking forward to seeing some hunting pics posted up. It is very interesting seeing the game you hunt there and the country is just flat out beautiful.
Good luck with the pup!

What ethics question?
Most all hunting ethics classes use shooting a sitting duck, roosted turkey as fodder for "legal but is it ethical?" discussions.

awesome thread!!!!!

Thanks! Just hope I get my weapon license in time. They changed the rules in June, but they didn't have the applications available. Typical liberal beaurocracy.

Shooting an animal that is sitting still is almost always more ethical than shooting a moving animal. I don't understand what you're getting at.

I’m sure Jack meant no offense. It’s kind of a cultural thing, Scandinavia does a lot of things differently than the USA doesn’t mean one way is better or worse.
I’ve shot thousands of ducks&geese and I have been known to water swat plenty of times! All’s fair in love and war, I don’t get hung up about it…I love eating waterfowl.

I'm not getting at anything in particular. I'm just saying that beyond shooting ducks with a rifle being illegal in the states, shooting a sitting duck with a shotgun (legal here) has always been used in hunter education classes as a discussion example as part of the ethics section. That is where the colloquialism of being a "sitting duck" originates. Similarly, shooting a roosted turkey is legal in my state, but is another example used for discussion in the ethics portion of the classes.

Truly, no offence intended...

Thanks,

Jack

I'm not offended. I'm just surprised to hear that there is disagreement on the ethics of shooting animals that are sitting still. It increases the chances of a clean kill, so it's more ethical than shooting a moving animal. As hunters we have an obligation to kill our prey as quickly as possible and minimize risk of wounding an animal. This was what I have always learned from my dad and uncle since I was about 12. I've never even heard someone suggest it's MORE ethical to shooting a moving animal than a stationary animal.

The issue in particular lies with waterfowl or upland game.

Deer or big game, absolutely more ethical to shoot it standing still.

Waterfowling in the states it is considered more ethical to shoot them on the wing, more sporting. I have never had issue with letting them land into the decoys, personally. But usually let them start to get up, but "water swatting" as it often is referred to I have no problem with. If you have done a good enough job to get them in that tight than I consider it a tribute to the skill of the hunter. However I'd say the majority the waterfowling community in the US tends to look down on it.

There is generally a difference between "animals" in general and "game birds" from a historical ethics point of view. Game birds are typically limited to shotgun fire. So things like shooting a ringneck on the ground or a sitting duck have been considered like "shooting fish in a barrel". The ethical argument is one of fair chase. With animals typically rifle hunted like deer, the wounding vs quick clean kill argument is often used in ethics classes. As Bill says, ethics vary from place to place and time to time. When I grew up, there were very few deer in our part of the state. With the low populations, if you saw a dog chasing a deer, you were taught you had an ethical obligation to shoot the dog. In some states, they hunt deer with dogs. These states often have seemingly impenetrable swamps and hunters would rarely kill a deer if they did not use dogs to run them out of these swamps.

This is just one example of ethical choices vary in different regions of the states.

Thanks,

Jack

Interesting take. I understand restricting bird hunting to shotguns; I'm from Ohio, and we hunted everything with shotguns. But the idea that it's unethical to shoot an animal that's sitting still is alien to me. I didn't even realize there was a controversy.

To avoid cluttering up the thread any more, I think I'll leave it at that.

Stocked our first fish today, ten pounds of fathead minnows and ten pounds of golden shiners. It went pretty smooth hatchery is a half hour south of me.
Plan is to stock redear and perch next spring if pond comes up good, then maybe next fall or following spring stock some predator fish.

Coolest thing so far today was while I was at the fish farm….they had 2’ paddle fish for sale!
I didn’t even know that was a thing? Owner said people put them in their ponds. They are $40 each, they are about the coolest looking fish I’ve ever seen!

They're native to Ohio. Very rare now. The Asian version is probably extinct.
