fishing reports

So I’m busting my butt at the farm. My 21 year old son is working his summer Job. He got a day off. Took my boat out to a shoal 5 miles off the beach with a 5 gallon bucket of chum. He invited several people to join him but none had time.

He sent me this. He wasn’t sure what it was or how much it weighed. I’m saying a 200lb dusky. Regardless he had fun and I’m proud of the fact that I raised a kid who would go do this alone.

A kid, a boat, a pole & bucket of bait ... great way to spend a day off!

I had yesterday off so early in the morning I took the dog for a run at our local park. There is a twenty acre pond on it so if it is real early I'll take a fishing pole along, I've been seeing some nice bass cruising the shoreline.
Didn't catch any bass but did hook into a few crappie, wife shot me a text on her way to work wondering where we had gone so I sent her this pic. It actually turned out kind of neat with the morning sky.

My son continues to smack the sharks. He and my neighbor went out Thursday and hooked 7 over 5 foot. They quit because their arms had enough. We usually run 3 baits 1 just off the bottom, 1 mid depth and a float bait. He said most were hooked on the top bait and they saw the dorsal fins out of the water approaching the bait.
Fun stuff! I just got home so this week it’s my turn to take some friends out...

Nice catch! Is that a lemon shark?

we call them browns. But their also known as sandbar sharks. Hoping for an inshore mako one of these days. if we get one of those it’s getting steaked out and going on the grill!

Look fun! What do you use for bait?

We troll for snapper bluefish along the beach. If that fails look for bunker balls on the way out and snag some with weighted treble hooks. If that fails we have fresh bunker in the cooler from the bait store.

always a frozen 5 gallon bucket of bunker or mackerel chum hanging of the back of the boat.

LOL! I had to google bunker balls ... still a newbie at this stuff

I’ll post video when I get it up on YouTube. But we got our butts handed to us today.

Won in the end and the unharmed shark did too.

Guys on the dock always roll their eyes when we say we’re going sharking. “Junk fish”

I flounder fish also, But June is shark month! Catch a bunch of short flounder with a bass rod or make your arm muscles burn. Hmmm 15 inch flounder or 200lb shark that you have to release? Not a hard choice for us......

Youngest son is down is south Florida vacationing and doing some DIY fly fishing. Besides catching largemouths he has caught some weird stuff, his goal was to catch a peacock bass.

Here’s a string of clips. Like I said, yank up a few flounder or do this!

can’t take credit for the hog at the end. My son had him to the boat 5 times. His arm gave out and I took over after the shark was spent.

That looks crazy, how big was the shark ... 7'-8'?

I’d say 7 foot and about 200lbs.
Headed back out tomorrow. My sons got a day off.

here’s one of those bunker balls you had to look up. Been waiting all year for them to school up this thick. Enough in the freezer now that we’ll have cut bait all summer.

Cichlid fishing in South Florida is some of the most fun i ever had. Mostly i caught tilapia and peacock bass. Occasionally there were oscars, managua cichlids, green terrrors, etc. You can literally get an ipad and a fishing rod and just head down there. Use a satellite app to find ponds and roadside ditches and just drive around fishing them. The fish are extremely aggressive and can even be spot fished.

My 8 year old has been saving up for his 1st baitcaster for a couple months. Last week we ordered a combo from Bass pro and it came. Per usual, the kids were fighting. He had my daughter's baton and wouldn't give it back, so I stupidly allowed her to hold his new baitcaster to show him what it feels like. I reinforced loudly several times for her to not stick the rod up into the ceiling fan. I turned my back for a few seconds and he was sobbing in tears that his new rod was broke in half because she put it into the ceiling fan. Sometimes ya just can't win.

Son is still at it in south Florida....some really crazy looking fish.
