Fall food plot mixes?

What’s everyone’s DIY fall food plot seed mixes and how much per acre. I purchased some of WI Pure Attraction for couple spots, but would like to plant few more acres and wanting to mix up my own seed mix. Would like to see what’s working well for others. I’m in Eastern part of NC. Thanks

Awnless wheat, winter rye, med red clover, arrowleaf clover, alfalfa, chicory, ladino clover, and bandura clover. 100lbs of rye, 50lbs wheat, 6lbs? red clover, 2-4lbs everything else.

I'm in KS...

I'm still trying to build soil. So I'm putting down oats, winter wheat and winter rye. I have about 150lbs of seed (50 of each), on a 1 1/2 acre plot.

Can't ya find someone who needs to get rid of some dump trucks worth of manure?

For a fall attraction plot I like oats, rye, sunflowers, peas, radishes, and an annual clover

75# rye, 50# oats, 15-20# sunflowers,10-15# peas, 8# red clover, 3# hairy vetch, 5# radishes

That used to be a good idea. Today I would be afraid of what the animals that produced it were eating. If their hay included invasive or round up resistant weeds I wouldn’t want the seed they would sending me.

I wish. I have had so many dreams of trying to find ways to get something like that and ag lime into my field without getting stuck in a creek bottom. My property is 3 miles up a seasonal road, and the field is another 1/2 mile up hill in the woods on a logging rd. With the overhanging growth and the lack of a dry/flat way to get in there, I don't think anyone would really want to try it and risk getting stuck.

Now just to clarify from the OP by your question about for your fall plots, did you mean what you are planting now (?) or did you mean what's growing now and planted over the summer? I think I was confused...

I use throw and roll/mow. Right now, I have groundhog radish, purple top turnips, brassica, rape, oats and austrian peas growing in my field (plus oats - I always keep the oats going).

What I over-seeded my plot 2 weeks ago with was the oats, wheat and rye. That's my fall planting for the winter and what I will have growing in the spring.

We ended up building a very diverse mix on Greencoverseed’s cover crop smartmix software.
I do t have access to the mix right now, but I believe it was 8-10 different species.

This year I planted Winter Rye, Daikon Radish, Med Red Clover, Crimson clover, Berseem clover, Balansa Clover, and Austrian winter peas. Then it didn't rain for 45 days...Winter Rye to the rescue.

Wheat and durana clover. Just overseed wheat into the clover the following year. Spray cleth for grass in the spring, mow a couple times for broadleaf control in summer. Mow after spreading wheat in subsequent falls.

For the fields I double crop, just planted 50# elbon rye, 50# wheat, 3# radishes and 1# ptt per acre. For the clover fields I planted 50# wheat, 3# radishes and 1# ptt plus whatever clovers I wanted to establish in the field. For wetter areas I included fixation balansa. In another field I went with Durana. Planted a lot of red clover and also added some crimson to a field.

I planted WR at 80-100 lbs/ac along with PTT at 2lbs/ac along with and annual or short-lived perennial clover at 10 lbs/ac. If I'm planting the field in the spring, I use crimson for the clover component. If not, I use medium red clover. The medium red lets me let the field go for a couple years while still providing good deer food.

Keep in mind my mix is chosen to meet our objectives. Depending on objectives and location, fall mixes could vary widely. I'm a bit north of you in zone 7A.

Thanks,

Jack

What is your experience with oats?

bill

Small plots - per acre rate 100lbs rye, 50 lbs oats, 5 lbs radish, 10 lbs medium red clover

This year I did a mix with rye, winter peas and radish. I feel like next year I will do a radish and pea mix. Then have a separate small grain one with peas. The timing is just off to throw rye in with the radish and I just don't have the greatest growth of rye if I throw it on later.

You guys that throw red clover in, do you get much growth in the fall?

Not much clover in the fall but it really takes off in the spring.

This pic was taken a couple weeks ago this was a throw and mow planted around Labor day, like Someday said the clover should take off in the spring.

I guess that is why I was wondering. For the guys that throw clover in are you intending to leave it a clover plot the following year or mainly for spring time food?

For the most part my intentions are to leave it clover for at least the following yr.
