broadcast planting with no cultipacker?

Bszweda

5 year old buck +
I am waiting on my cultipacker to be deilvered and won't have it for at least 5 to 6 weeks. That being said I was thinking about going down to my property to mow, then spray ( two days later) while broading casting some sort of seed. I was thinking Buckwheat or Clover. The planting will be long and narrow on my trail system 8 to 10 feet wide. Would I be better off waiting till my cultipacker shows up and doing the same planting process in August or September with Oats & WR?

Thanks,
Brad

I’d give it a shot now. If you wait you’ll have a bunch of new weed seeds to deal with in the future.

Agreed, I planted via broadcast for years without having a cultipacker. The key is to seed before a rain since most of the seed will sit on top and be open to birds, etc.

Seed about 50% more than you normally would and you'll have a great stand. I've done this successfully with both clover and buckwheat. I will say depending on your climate zone, you're probably a little late for clover as it prefers cooler weather, but as long as you get plenty of rain initially it will probably still establish fine. Great timing for Buckwheat however.

You might spray, then broadcast and mow.. In that order, to get the thatch / coverage on your seed. As long as you have seed to soil contact, it works fine.

Good luck!

I’d do as Bass said as well. I’d spray, wait 6-8 days and go back and broadcast your seed then mow and get the thatch on top. After that, since it’s a planting of only 8-10 ft wide, use a quad or tractor and drive over the thatch and it will work just like a cultipacker. Try to time before a rain but it’s not always easy to do even when it’s 80per chance of rain as every food plotter knows.

I find culitpacking increases germination rates when using T&M methods for most seed but one can compensate with higher seeding rates.

I run a lawn roller over my seed after we spread it. But then we run the 4x4 and/or truck over it. In my latest pictures you can see the best growth is in lines where the tires were. Other seeds do come up but the best is in the tire lines.

A lawn roller presses seed into the ground kind of like a cultipacker but puts a smooth surface on it. A cultipacker puts an irregular surface on the ground to help rain water be absorbed rather than run off. The ATV tires are working more like a cultipacker than a roller, they just take more time and cover less area per pass.

Agreed. I'd rather use the packer but don't own one yet. It's on the list of things I need to buy

Cut a tree down and drag it behind the ATV.

I planted food plots for forty years without a cultipacker. Here is a browntop millet stand broadcast into a field that had been sprayed with gly. Nothing else done, no mowing, rolling, - nothing.

Yep, a lot depends on the underlying soils.

I plant all my seeds by spraying spreading them lightly tilling including a corn and beans very rarely do I have to replant.
