Young apple/crabs vs gypsy moth caterpillars

The gypsy's completely stripped my apple trees last year, but they did re-leaf and seem to be doing just fine so this year. I have a roll of duct tape and some bearing grease that I have in my truck, in case I start seeing tree damage again this year. I have been successful in keeping them off...

Drill large seeds, broadcast smaller seeds or drill all?

Thanks, everyone!! The more I think about it, the more it makes sense to plant the larger seeds, like buckwheat and soybeans, but broadcast the smaller seeds. In the end it’s more work, but I think the results will be much better. A lot of my plots are in muck soils, which are very soft and...

Drill large seeds, broadcast smaller seeds or drill all?

I have a 2 row, JD Flex 71 planter. I normally use this for soybeans and buckwheat, but I would like to plant a seed blend this spring/early summer that would also incorporate some turnips, rape and clover. I messed with the planter seed plates last fall and it does disperse the mix fairly well...

    Amphibious vehicles

The Argos have terrible ground clearance. It doesn't take much to get them hung up. I have a neighbor that put tracks on his UTV and he claims it is like night and day with what he can go through..

9 year old son got it done again

Congrats to you and your son. I'm sure it was a bittersweet moment. If you hunt long enough. you will experience the frustration of a lost deer.

Seed blend with plate type planter

I am actually able to use the planter as a no till. I have very soft soils by me...very high in organic matter. They are referred to as "muck" soils. My current openers do a good job of penetrating the ground, even on my ridge, which is more sandy.

Seed blend with plate type planter

Well, my curiosity got the best of me and I had to experiment on Sunday. I mixed up some soybeans, sunflower, buckwheat, trophy rape, forage radish and winter rye. I used a round style corn plate, just slightly larger than the soybean seed, which was the largest seed in the mix. It worked like...

Seed blend with plate type planter

I think I will experiment one of these rainy weekends. I think as long as I use a seed plate that has openings slightly larger than the largest seed, it might work. Trying to control how much seed I put down will be the tricky part. I can adjust that somewhat with different size plates and...

Seed blend with plate type planter

I have a JD 71 flex planter. For anyone that uses a seed plate type planter, have you had any luck trying to plant a seed blend with different size seeds with this type of set up? I would like to experiment and try it. Any advise that you can offer?

    Habitat projects for the weekend?

I think I will put my lock on bow stands up tomorrow and a couple of ground blinds. The season does not start for a couple of months yet, but that will give time for the deer to adjust. I would put my fall brassicas in, but I don't see much in the forecast for rain this next week. I have some...
