Top of "The Hill" land tour

Awesome map Bat Man. I love the idea of circling around on the state land.

Well I finally made it up to camp and got some work done. Didn't make it over to the new land but still waiting on forester to mark everything so nothing to do there yet. I was greeted by my neighbor who lives there all year. He said there were a few deer around all winter but one of the big does was hit by a car. Better news was the local group who runs dogs on our road got 42 coyotes this winter so hopefully some fawns will make it. Then it was off to work. I was very encouraged by my trees. I had one Kerr snapped in half and two pears. Unfortunately it was my only pear that wasn't damaged last year. Not sure why it would have snapped this year after making it last year. The rest of my fruit trees looked really good. I was able to get the 8 large crab apples I bought on clearance last fall planted and 50 seedling from cold stream. I also had 200 shrubs from MDC but didn't get to them. I will get them in next weekend and I have to finish clearing where most of my 25 apple trees are going.

Trying to post more pics but it's not working

You may have to go into your browser and clear your cached web content. I used to have trouble with that constantly until I cranked down my storage limit. What browser are you using?

I am on an iPad and when I click on upload a file the window pops up to add a existing file but it doesn't let me open it. It just keeps putting a cursor in the box. I have never seen that before.

I've had a similar issue using my iphone to post pics. Did you resize your pics before you tried to post them? My iphone pics are way to big to post straight from my phone. I email them to myself and when prompted to select size, I go with medium, re-download them to my phone and then they'll post.

Otherwise, try closing all the apps you're not using and then try again.

Nope. Nothing is working

Last trick I could offer is rebooting your ipad. I'm afraid that's the end of my bag of tricks.

Did that too. I guess I will let it rest over night and see if it works tomorrow. Just like my first car, a 1980 Chrysler Cordova. Doesn't start today runs fine tomorrow.

Knowing where you're located - it's probably still FROZEN !!! Thaw the D*** thing out !!! :D

Here is my Kerr that snapped and what I tried to fix it.

This is one of my 8 clearance crabs I put in to help with pollination. I put them around the outside of my orchard and a couple near some old native apples.

I started to clear the area I cut a few weeks ago. Just wanted some play time in the backhoe. I will finish this next weekend so I can plant the following weekend

Why are those trees snapping ?

Why are those trees snapping ?
Somehow when the snow pack gets to 3' it is snapping the trees. Not sure how it must be a freeze thaw thing.

Here is more ground clearing

Finally some green, I will blow all the leaves off this weekend.

When uploading pictures from your iPhone, take a screen shot of your picture. Then upload the screen shot instead of the original picture. Works every time!

Hmm. Are those snapped trees planted on a slope where maybe the deep snow slides/shifts causing the snap?

That Kerr is not on a slope but probably 10 feet from the edge of where one starts. The pears that have snapped are all on flat ground.

Blow the leaves off! Don't, that's worm food and om.
Yesterday morning I left work during a good rain. my driveway and the road adjacent to my lawn was loaded with crawlers and worms, hundreds of them. Why? Because I mulch all my leaves and grass, and them worms are eating it up. That is the best fertilizer there is. Best aeration there is too! There was not a worm outside my lot line, because worms don't eat synthedic fertilizer everyone else uses On their lawns.
Don't blow those couple leaves off

I was worried it wouldn't let the clover come up. I can leave it, one less thing to do. Thanks.

Chummer,

I think you need to come up with a protection for those young trees. Could you take some pallets and form an "A" frame around them?

That is my million dollar question. What to do with these trees for the first few winters. Last winter I learned that any branch below three feet would be ripped off by the snow, so this year I had a lot less damage because I removed them as they sprouted. My guess on the Kerr is that cluster of branches at about 3.5' ended up below the snow pack and thus broke. The pear tree had almost the same formation. I think I am going to try and keep the trunk bare up to 4.5'. Not sure the effect that will have on the tree but it has to be better than having them ripped off in the winter. I would like to try the pallets but with 40 trees it would be an eye sore. I think I will try it at my new land because I will be the only one looking at it.

Sorry to see the snapped trees. I think your clearance crabapple looks like a good one. Is your land clearing to plant fruit trees or food plot ??
