Snapping Turtles

JLemon

5 year old buck +
On June 2nd this female snapper laid her eggs in a pipeline running through our property. There’s no water for quite some distance. Today I decided to dig in the nest and see if anything survived.

Maybe that’s typical?

I know nothing about them..

It probably is. I’ve seen them travel a long way to lay their eggs. I couldn’t imagine any of the hatchlings making it back to a water source before they died or predators got them though. There were 27 alive and it looks like all the eggs hatched except for 2. We took them all to a pond and let them go.

I have had many different turtles including painted, snapping, etc. in my fields and food plots 200-300 yards from any water source (pond or stream) laying eggs.

They seem to like soft field edges and disturbed soil areas. They will also need warm soil to help the hatching process and the hatchlings need to get out of the nest.

They do not have a plan, much is evolutionary as they can live to over 80 plus years. Regardless of what we do to the land, they have instinct guiding them.

Enjoy mother nature at work ...

Yeah lot of instinct going on there. Small brains. I'd kinda feel sorry for them if they didn't taste so good. Alligator snappers are crazy. Can get over 200 lbs. On the endangered list in IL but I guess they do exist in the southern parts of the state.

All I will say is your dealing with a creature that has been on the planet for millions of years....I'm willing to bet they have got it fairly figured out.

Should have called "the turtle man"! That show was pretty messed up..... Looking for large turtles like that...under the water...how he had all his fingers I have no idea!

I have no doubt that after millions of years they have it pretty figured out. I also have no doubt a lot more will survive with me putting them in a pond than if they had to run the 1/4 mile gauntlet to the nearest water source.
Ernie kept all his fingers because of Thunder and Lolly Dog. Live Action!!

I believe turtle man is from Kentucky

Hey,Native Hunter.......is he a neighbor?
