Rooting root stock cuttings

Honker

5 year old buck +
I read on the NAFEX facebook page that someone was taking the cuttings from their root stock when they grafted, and planting them. The were getting about 65% to root. I wish I would have thought about that before I grafted, I would have saved them and tried it. Have any of you tried this? Seems like an easy way to propagate a few root stock every year.

It could work with some varieties but nothing lost if it fails. I tried rooting hardwood cuttings from 4 apple rootstocks last winter. Using rooting hormone and bottom heat to help it callous, I had no success. I think the trick is finding good recipes/processes. What works for one rootstock may not work for another.

I experimented a few years ago with some M106 cuttings and had some luck.
