Opened the Mailbox and got a Big GRIN

Got a mysterious box in the mail today. Opened it up and there were my scions that I had ordered from the USDA GRIN.
Beautiful thick scions, extremely well marked. I know it's awful early but will watch over these beauties until it's time to graft.

Two of each requested varieties and the price is FREE for the asking. I believe the deadline to order wood is past for this year but I know I'll be putting in an order next year. It's the one free government program I'm in favor of :D.
 
Those are some very nice scions! I might have to try them out next year. Figured they would give you the run around and provide poor materials. Like the government we all know!:D

I wish I would have looked at this when you guys were talking about it way back when! I dropped the ball on some free scion that I could have used....dang!
 
Looks like I wasn't paying attention and missed the boat on this one. Thanks for the heads up on this program. I'll do it for next year.

If you scroll down you will see a line that says: Request this gremplasm If you click on it, it will put this variety on your "request list". When you have listed all that you want you click on complete and it takes you to an order form to fill out. Keep playing with the website and you'll figure it out. I seem to think that orders have to be received by the end of Dec. to get scion for the next springs grafting.
 
Did they send you guys a confirmation or anything when you submitted your order? I just submitted an order to see if it would work, just wondering if they let you know anything.

I played around with their website some more. I can't figure out how to search for multiple things at once but if you go into the observations section, you can get more information about an apple. Their data may not be very complete but you know what they know. You can choose a characteristic and look for apples that have the same rating for that characteristic. Using that, the links below give fruit holding, harvest date, and fireblight resistance for shoots and blossums.
