It rained so I was stalking/scouting a new area this morning and found these leaves and was curious if anyone could ID. Most of the lobes are round indicating a white Oak but I did find some that were more pointed like picture #2.
I’m in Central NY and this appears to be a native tree given its remote location.
Also found this in the swamp, and didn’t recognize it so I figured I’d throw it out there. Most of the tree/bush was the elongated pine cone looking thing, the round one looked like a black berry.
White oaks are a funny thing. There's so much variation in them. Just when I think I have them figured out, I get thrown for a loop.
I have 1/2 dozen "whites" that are about 9-10' tall and were all planted at the same time. Most look like what "whites" should look like, but one looks more like a bur and another is this one pictured. It's got longer, skinny leaves than the others. I wonder if it's got some chestnut oak in it (sauls)?
These are mostly seedlings from tree one and a few from tree four, along with sawtooth. They have had a rough year with drought most of it. I had really good luck with the sawtooth direct seeded into pvc and covered with a screen, no loses through the the dry spring and early summer with a little watering. Probably will be my go to method from now on, along with tubes in the spring.
