Michigan apple orchards

Just got back from traveling the UP. Was curious about what appeared to be numerous abandoned apple orchards. What is the story here? Wish some one could figure out a way transplant these.

UP is a big place! Maybe a little more specific???? West side? North? Near?? I have a brother up near Marquette.

First starting noticing them around Kalkaska. As we moved into the UP there were several all along Highway 2 and side roads running off of Highway 2. At least two had been converted into RV campgrounds. Many were clearly not being harvested anymore with no apparent maintenance being conducted. Saw several in the two to five acre size and some quite larger.
