I agree, the rack says young, likely 2.5 or could look like a big yearling with velvet off. The fat gut sure jumps out at ya, but I have pics of button bucks looking just as fat. I'd say 2.5 unless you have more pics that show off his body better.
I'm still always trying to learn how big yearlings can get in the wild. Never gotten a good grasp on it.
Im going with what Bill said: he's heavy in the gut and has a a pretty defined snout, a day time pic and another angle would make a big diff...
I did give him the fact he's going into his third fall and is a 2.5, especially in generalization of your areas genetics. The gut and nose say older but I doubt hes on his way down and though I realize he's is his summer clothes - his haunches are kind of wanting for an older deer. A day pic would really give a better idea of what his rack has done - never liked black and white night images - they can give to and take away from whats really there... I've seen 1.5's with a 15" rack that looked like that and 2.5 with a 17" rack looking much the same in night shots with that quartering angle.... to me the gut says he's at least a 2.5 rack tells me he's not a 3.5 . Its always an opinionated guess anyways right?,... till you get him dropped on the ground that is... nice deer regardless
Thanks for the replies... so far it’s only the first picture of him. His gut and nose make me think 3 1/2. Which is what I try to target for in my area and probably put him on the hit list because he won’t amount to much. He could really only be 2 1/2. Which then he gets a pass from me. But comparing to 1 1/2’s that are using the plot, he’s bigger than those. I think at first glance at the rack... you think a 2 1/2 but racks can be deceiving and I do seem to get older bucks that are missing g3’s or there like an inch long.
Brassicas are just hitting the 45 day mark. Just starting to get bulbs. The neighboring beans are starting to yellow so this plot is starting to draw already.
I'd say 3.5 at the youngest. Antler size says nothing of age. This time of year they arent/shouldn't be that fat. But, like others have mentioned not the best angle.

Ditto what Bueller said regarding the 1 1/2 year age likelihood... shared link does a fair job of showing just how dramatic the changes are the first 4 years even for a booner.
I agree hes chubby and im not saying he couldnt be a 2 yr old. Where Ive hunted across MN and western WI its not uncommon to have 1 1/2 yr old bucks that are 12" wide and sporting a 3x3 (or larger) set of antlers.
Hes probably 2 1/2. Great deer! Certainly the "fat kid". Good luck getting him.

Hopefully i’ll be able to take the one behind him. I was really just curious on this guys age and wondered if he needed to be add to “hit list” because of age.
