Can you graft an apple scion on to a hawthorn? And will it produce apples? Thank you

It is possible to graft pear onto hawthorn but I've not read of doing it with apple. With pear, the pear grows more vigorously than the hawthorn understock. With time the pear can become too heavy for the graft to support and blow over.
